Hamilton’s Khaki Field collection is a real staple among watch enthusiasts, especially beginners. With watches with manual winding, automatic and quartz movements, there’s something for everyone. And with prices ranging from 400 to 2,000 euros, there are plenty of affordable options. Today, we’ll take a look at some new additions to the lower end of the collection’s price range. The new Hamilton Khaki Field Quartz comes in four colors and is available in 33mm and 38mm cases. Get ready to resist the urge to buy.
Most of the watches in Hamilton’s Khaki Field collection feature automatic or manual winding movements. The other quartz watches available today feature a 40mm case, Arabic numerals from 1 to 24, and a date window at the 3 o’clock position. They also have a more authentic look and are a bit more expensive at 575 euros. So, without further ado, let’s check out some affordable, new and fun Khaki Field quartz watches.
Hamilton Khaki Field Quartz 33mm and 38mm sizes
If you’re familiar with the mechanical (hand-wound) versions of Hamilton’s Khaki Field, there won’t be many surprises in terms of case shape and finish. The 33mm and 38mm versions of the new Khaki Field Quartz models have a very similar case shape and finish to the mechanical models. The cases are made entirely from the same bead-blasted stainless steel and feature the same simple design with an angled bezel at the top. We like that even these more affordable models feature scratch-resistant sapphire crystal.
The 38mm case is 8.3mm thick and 45.5mm lug-to-lug, making it a bit more compact than the mechanical models. The 33mm version is even thinner, at 7.55mm thick and measuring 40.5mm lug-tip-to-tip. The very flat shape of these watches is convenient, especially when wearing either on a double-pass NATO strap.
In contrast to the case, the dials of these new Khaki Field Quartz models look quite different. Whereas the mechanical versions have a 24-hour display, these quartz models simply have large numerals from 1 to 11 and a triangle at 12 o’clock. The chapter ring is also now a closed train track, and in addition to the Hamilton logo at 12 o’clock, you’ll find Khaki branding at 6 o’clock. This latter element uses a very pretty open font that was adopted from previous Khaki Field models. The simple syringe-style hands are the same as on the Khaki Field Mechanical.
Available in three colors: black, blue, and white
Both sizes of the new Hamilton Khaki Field Quartz are available with black, blue, or white dials. When it comes to the black dial, there are two versions to choose from: a more contemporary version with a white minute track, white hands, and greenish lume on the hands and numerals. The other black version uses a more yellowish lume that mimics the attractive patina of many vintage watches.
A similar artificial patina can also be seen on the white dial version of the Khaki Field Quartz, which was not available for review. Additionally, this version has black printing and black hands. The blue version is the cleanest, featuring white printing and matching white Super-LumiNova.
The black and white versions of the “Fauxtina” come with an army green NATO strap with three fixed brown keepers, while the blue version comes with a matching blue NATO strap with three matching keepers. Finally, the more contemporary black version comes with an all-black strap. For the 33mm model, the strap is 18mm wide, while the 38mm versions each come with a 20mm wide strap. To be honest, it’s hard to pick a favorite. I’m not usually a big fan of faux patina, but it looks great on the Khaki Field. But in the end, I think I’ll go with the blue version, which has the cleanest look. Price-wise, Hamilton keeps it simple at 440 euros for both the big and small versions.
Hamilton Khaki Field Quartz on the Wrist
You’ll immediately notice how light the Khaki Field Quartz model is on your wrist, especially with the included NATO strap, which makes the watch almost invisible in terms of weight. I choose the 38mm version for my 17cm wrist; it fits well and I like the larger crown. The 33mm version looks even larger than the 38mm version. I also like this dial layout better than the cluttered design of the Khaki Field Mechanical. Again, the railroad-style minute track ties it all together for a clean look.
What surprised me was that all three clasps on the included strap are fixed. Usually one is loose so you can adjust it depending on the remaining length of the strap. In this case, that wasn’t the case, so for Jorg, who has a larger wrist, some of the strap ended up hanging out. On the other hand, the strap is well-made and the fact that the clasp is made of leather is a nice touch.
lastly
Overall, I think the new Hamilton Khaki Field Quartz is a fun watch to carry around with you. It’s water resistant to 50m and has a sapphire crystal, so it can withstand shocks and you don’t have to think about winding or setting it, making it a very carefree option and at the same time, it looks great with its typical field watch design. At 440 euros, the Khaki Field Quartz isn’t too expensive and I think it’s a great watch to have on hand.
