Une Folle Journée is French for “crazy day.” When I first put the une follejournée on my wrist, it may have started like everyone else, but it is no longer a normal day. This is a huge achievement for the young Paris watch brand. The “crazy day” displayed by the three-height circles is nothing new, but the Trilobe Une Folle Journée Rhodium Plated Editions of Black, Blue and Green are. Let’s take a look at three watches with a 40.5mm titanium case. The movement bridge shows a rhodium-plated finish to enhance building quality.
Trilobe is still very young, but was founded in 2018 by Gautier Massonneau in Paris, but the brand’s work has a very unique look and is quickly recognised. That’s not a bad outcome for a financial man who has decided to create complex watches with unconventional time displays that don’t rely on traditional watches’ hands. Massonneau wanted each Trilobe clock to tell a story and evoke emotion. That philosophy won four Trilobe nominations at the prestigious Grand Prix D’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG), which won the Petite Aiguille Award in 2022.
Three new colors for the sensual yet elegant three-yorob Yul Fall Journey Rhodium plating edition
Trilobe’s Une Folle Journée is not a completely new watch, but the new Rhodium Plated Editions from Black, Blue and Green do justice to the brand’s concept. In the heart, it is still a patented X-center caliber. This automatic movement is the result of a collaboration with Le Cercle des Horlogers from La Chaux-De-Fonds. It debuted in 2020 and currently supplies all Trilobe Wristwatches. However, with these three new “Crazy Day” editions, the movement has undergone several aesthetic changes. The X-centered bridge features rhodium-plated finishes that enhance the architecture. Highlighting the details of the caliber allow visual interaction with concentric circles to deepen the three-dimensionality of the watch.
Three rotating rings, each displaying a gradation of time, rotate through a mechanism suspended under a large sapphire crystal dome, allowing the wearer to see the time from various angles. Sapphire Domes are made in Japan and are smooth and refined in Switzerland.
Time ring
The three rings, black, blue or green, don’t just play some kind of dance under the glass dome. In reality, they communicate time very intuitively. Trilobe reversed the three traditional hands that move around fixed numbers. Instead, the disk displays the maximum time, the middle minutes, and the minimum minutes, but passes by the red marker indicating the current time.
Also, the three disks turn on different levels, with the lowest time, minutes in the middle and seconds in the highest level. You will need nine pillars to hold these rings, with the highest being a little seat above the dial (!). With that in mind, the 17.8mm thickness of the watch doesn’t seem to be that out of place. The Trilobe Une Folle Journée certainly isn’t a slim watch, but that wasn’t the idea behind it either. However, despite its thickness, the shape and original time display make this an elegant watch. By giving the timing ring a strong colour that contrasts strongly with rhodium plating movement, the UNE Folle Journée looks a little industrial. Trilobe has created a mechanical microcosmo with a futuristic touch.
Be able to touch color and contrast
So, what is your favorite colorway for the central off-center stack of the ring? Mine is probably green. It’s not too traditional or trendy. You may have seen the black and blue time rings before in the Une Folle Journée collection, but they turned their movement up with a dark Anthradec finish. These new versions of rhodium-plated backgrounds bring lighterness to the look of the UNE Folle Journée. You may want to know that each ring is made of titanium cornice, with dents and polished. Each also holds an inner ring finished with curved satin, run with titanium-aluminum alloy. It is understandable why Trilobe chose titanium for its lightness, but metals are extremely difficult to shape and polish. Fortunately, after paying close attention to doing so, the results are sparkling and spectacular.
Looking at past rings and pillars
Looking past the Time Ring, there is no dial, so you can take a closer look at the movement in the 196 section. The X-center caliber, made with custom-made components, is a micro-rotor movement designed and developed exclusively by Trilobe, with a thickness of just 6.49mm. It features sharp edges, hand polished, and multi-layer bridges and plates with microblast finish due to the use of diamond tip tools.
The editions plated with three Une Folle Journée Rhodium are exotic watches with windy appearance and characters. Thankfully, they look wearable. Now, these are not “everyday beaters,” but they don’t take over the room anytime soon, like other enthusiastic pieces from independent watchmakers. A round, not too extra bunt titanium case with a moderate 40.5mm diameter may keep you from insanity.
