time + tide
One of the many benefits of reviving a watch brand is the fact that you can experience a particular type of watch with the safety and comfort of modern watchmaking. You don’t have to spend thousands of dollars to acquire vintage pieces or spend hundreds more on services. Instead, you can wear a great watch revival knowing that you have a reliable machine on your wrist. The design and manufacturing have been modernized for more solid daily wear. Frankly, a trend can seem like a quick buck, sometimes for the love of watches, and sometimes for the love of watches. But those who rebooted Trematic were clearly motivated by the former. A hands-on look at Archivio Uno Ref. 502 hopes to prove that.
case
There are clock designs and there are clock designs. Similarly, there is watchmaking and there is watchmaking. In both cases, one is the process and the other is the dedication to quality and craftsmanship. minute ref. The 502 Blue is the latter, just by looking at its case design and manufacturing. It boasts a completely sleek body of 316L stainless steel that shines through its thin and elongated profile. There, the lugs descend towards the wrist like claws and are tall and gentle against the skin thanks to the pronounced curvature below. of twisted rugs. Additionally, the lugs appear (visually) to be soldered to the case. Another vintage-inspired touch is the caseback, which is designed to look like an old-school Snap-on.
38mm diameter, 45.5mm lug to lug, 9mm thickness (10.8mm with crystal), 20mm lug width, micro ref. The 502 fits many wrists including 6.50 inch/16.5cm as pictured in this article. This model is also thin considering the scratch-resistant domed sapphire crystal that provides a clear view of the dial thanks to the internal and external reflective coatings. 50 meters of water resistance and a push/pull crown are naturally expected for this type of watch (everyday, elegant). The latter is deliciously small, coming in at 5.3mm in diameter. As mentioned above, the case is actually completely polished and even the crown bestows a rematic ref. 502 Elegant wrist presence.
dial
Just as the case has an elegant profile, so does the dial, which is crafted with equal measures of sophistication, symmetry, and 1950s design elements. First things first: Blue is the newest addition to the 502 collection. Add a fourth iteration to the three that already exist. This is our personal favorite as the blue has a dark tone and matte finish. If you look closely, the center section is actually lighter than the outside, making the inner hour/minute track easier to read and contributing to the watch’s branding and information for a subtle pop. The text is printed in the same muted white as the various sized hash marks, so you can appreciate the cohesive color choice here. Highlights both the hourly increments and the minutes, thus highlighting the central part of the dial without driving much attention to it.
Naturally, this dark outer section helps the sophisticated applied time markers stand out. The 1950s uniform time rounded geometric Arabic numerals and odd time arrowhead alternatives are elegant, easy to read, and actually very 1950s/60s. Fully polished, like the case, the hour markers create an attractive light play, angle your wrist in one direction. It is also created by perfectly polished hands. The hour and minute hands look like a hybrid of Dauphine and Leaf style hands, playing nicely with the dial layout and case design. There is no doubt that the Trematic has gone completely vintage, as the photos can show, rather than cutting corners on the manufacturing and finishing of each element.
strap
Each color variant of minute ref. The 502 ships on a fruit-derived vegan leather strap that pairs smartly with the dial. The Blue 502 is paired with a light brown strap with a soft grain and velvety backing, two surprising features that come from a vegan leather strap. The buckle is a solid piece of fully polished 316L stainless steel, revealing a finely engraved brand logo. The strap is equipped with a quick release spring bar for easy strap changes.
movement
Inside the tiny ref. Find the Swiss made vending SW200-1 Elabore that plays friend at 502 blue, 28,800 bph (4 Hz) and comes with a 41 hour power reserve. This movement seems appropriate for a watch of this style, and we commend it for keeping the 502 slim, even with the inclusion of the domed sapphire crystal.
