In episode 4, a matter of time, we explore the distinction between a good clock, a great clock, and a Holy Grail clock. Andrew, Eleonor, and Krisitian dive deep into what separates these categories in terms of design, quality, emotional value and personal importance. Of course, the trio acknowledge that the way watches are individually evaluated is highly subjective, especially when distinguishing between good, great watches, the Holy Grail clocks.

They emphasize that technical specifications are valuable, but design often plays the most important role in defining the appeal of a watch. They each share examples of good, great, and holy grail-considering watches. A “good” watch is characterized by the value of Christopher Ward Desk Diver, everyday wear and reliability. Like the Bulgarioto Finisimo and Cartier Santos Dumont, the “Great” watch enhances the experience, making it more refined and desirable through excellent craftsmanship, innovative engineering (e.g. ultra-thin cases, integrated bracelets, etc.), and iconic design details.
The Grail category, which represents the pinnacle of clock collection, is Patek Philippe Nautilus ref. 3700. The gang discusses how Grail’s status transcends technical attributes and is often influenced by heritage and storytelling, becoming a deeply personal and emotional concept.
Emotions can really shake things up in each direction due to the clock score on such a scale. It depends on the relationship between the individual and the clock. The Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse is one of the important examples mentioned as both Eleonor and Kristian have strong family connections with models and design. These watches bring enormous historical significance, rarity and emotional attachment that are often associated with personal memories and aspirations.
The episode also touches on social and cultural aspects of watches, including how gender influences design and perceptions, the role of celebrities like George Clooney in watch culture, and the collaborative experiences of sharing watches and stories.
