In 2024, Piaget celebrated the 45th anniversary of Yves Piaget’s Polo Watch. It was announced last February, and RJ had said that it would probably beat it with a watch and a wonder 2024. We all know that RJ has been very interested in yellow gold watches these days, but he was right. The yellow gold Piaget Polo 79 was a huge hit with its epic construction of brushed blocks and refined Gadron. It’s no wonder Piaget decided to create a version of this year’s Watches and Wonders Geneva in white gold.
I’m sure RJ won’t agree with me here, but I like the fact that this white gold version of the Piaget Polo 79 is better than last year’s yellow gold one. The yellow gold version tries to attract your attention with its outstanding colorway. Meanwhile, the white gold version focuses more on the combination of brushed blocks and refined Gadron. It’s more modest, more modest and still very impressive.
Piaget Polo 79 in white gold
In terms of specs, the Piaget Polo 79 is the same as last year’s yellow gold version. The watch has a diameter of 38mm and is only 7.45mm thick thanks to the ultra-thin movement inside. In yellow gold, the Polo 79 weighed 200 grams. I’m sure the white gold version isn’t too far away. Of course, that is due to all the gold structure wrapped around the wrist. Some say it feels like they’re wearing a bracelet instead of a watch. Something like that makes me think about how my beloved Cartier Santos Garbe XL wears.
However, Piaget’s Polo 79 takes it to a completely different level. The case consists of seven interconnected white gold blocks. In the middle there is a large hole in the dial and movement. A polished gadrone then sits between the brushed blocks, and the dial mimics the same structure. Ultimately, everything appears to be able to bend in a specific gadrone. Of course, the optical illusion is spectacular, although otherwise the movement will not work properly.
Piaget’s 1200p1 micro rotor movement
The 1979 Piaget Polo had a quartz movement. This re-edit has an ultra-thin automatic movement inside. It is only 2.35mm thick and acquires energy from micro rotors outside the center. It operates at a frequency of 21,600VPH, features 25 gems and holds a 44-hour power reserve. Beautiful finishes include Zeneve’s circular coat, parage, diagonal bridges and blue screws. With the caseback, you can see almost the entire movement through a rather large sapphire crystal. It also reassures that the watch is 50 meters resistant. But if I were you, I wouldn’t swim this watch.
Are you in Camp Yellow or White Gold?
In general, I’m more interested in white gold than yellow gold, so I’m happy that Piaget gave me the opportunity to see this new version. But will it fall into my collection? I doubt that. The yellow gold version is already quite expensive at 83,500 euros, while the white gold version is even more expensive. The new Piaget Polo 79 in white gold costs 92,000 euros. White gold watches are usually a little more expensive than their yellow gold counterparts. Sometimes that’s because the production process is a little more labour-intensive, but I don’t know if that’s true here.
Anyway, despite its off-limits pricing, I still think this new Piaget Polo 79 in white gold looks absolutely incredible. what about you? Do you go into yellow or white gold more? In the comments below, please tell us why you like either.
