Our Australian friends at Time+Tide have teamed up with TAG Heuer to create a new version of the Aquaracer Solargraph. Stylistically, this is Time+Tide through and through. The Sundowner takes inspiration from the Aquaracer Solargraph, a watch that has become almost synonymous with Time+Tide founder Andrew McCutchen, and infuses it with Australian outback sources. Let’s take a closer look!
Once you dig it out, you might want to hurry and get your hands on one of the 250 produced. These can be found at Time+Tide’s Watch Discovery Studios in London and Melbourne, the T+T website, and TAG Heuer boutiques in Australia and New Zealand. Finally, the TAG Heuer website offers a small number.
TAG Heuer Aquaracer Solargraph × Time+Tide “Sundowner”
If you’ve run into Time+Tide founder Andrew McUtchen lately, there’s a good chance you’ve spotted a Solargraph Aquaracer on his wrist. He wears a Bark & Jack ribbed NATO strap and it looks great. In fact, I snatched it off his wrist and tried it on at this year’s Watches and Wonders. I saw the appeal right away. This watch is light and has a very subdued eerie matte texture. Combine the ease of use of a solar-powered quartz movement with the resulting slim profile and you have a winning recipe. The ribbed NATO strap also looks great with a T-shirt.
So when TAG Heuer and Time+Tide team up, it’s no surprise in the world that the result is what you see here. The Sundowner features aesthetic tweaks inspired by the Australian outback. While Andrew’s Solargraph looks cool with its combination of titanium, black, and pale blue, the Sundowner feels warm with rose-toned accents and an army green strap.
A few years ago I was lucky enough to go camping in the Outback. I wandered around Uluru (aka Ayers Rock) and spent several nights in a sleeping bag next to a campfire. It’s never been this hot and dusty, but I’ve also never felt so small. I drove for hours through the desolate, bright terracotta void. The sky seemed to be filled with 10 times more stars than anywhere else I’ve been. I didn’t drink a single drop of alcohol, but I’m sure any sunset lover would have sunk in good spirits after circumnavigating Ayers Rock. I saw you wearing this watch on your wrist.
sundowner specs
The Aquaracer Solargraph Sundowner features a 40mm grade 2 titanium case with a fully sandblasted finish. The result is a subdued, spartan surface that’s smooth to the touch. The titanium unidirectional rotating bezel features rose gold-tone markers. Naturally, you get the recipe for a modern diver’s watch: a screw-down crown, a sapphire crystal, and a screw-down case back. TAG Heuer rates water resistance to 200 meters.
Inside is the caliber TH50-00, which is based on the solar quartz movement of the La Joux Perret/Citizen family. The movement is powered by a solar cell located behind the translucent dial. Works with both sunlight and artificial light. Fully charged after 40 hours of sunlight, it will last for 10 months. The battery can withstand 15 years of continuous use, minimizing maintenance costs.
The black dial features 18K 5N rose gold-plated applied indexes, a double logo, and hands. It features the TAG Heuer logo at 12 o’clock and the Time+Tide logo at 6 o’clock. As mentioned earlier, this watch comes with a ribbed NATO strap. The army green fabric complements the grade 2 titanium gold-tone PVD treated hardware.
first impression
I have always been a big fan of the Aquaracer Solargraph. It is a watch with its own unique identity, which is rare in the field of diving watches. Its negligible weight, unassuming appearance, and solar-powered movement make it the perfect watch that’s instantly forgettable. You can see that it plays the role of a weekend safety watch in the collection, as well as a reference time when setting mechanical watches.
After trying out Andrew’s Solargraph, I could certainly see the appeal of its combination with the ribbed NATO strap. I think a rose gold/green theme would work even better here. Subtle hints of rose gold add warmth to this rather clinical watch. Conceptually, you may be wondering why you would need a diver’s watch on the Outback. Well…maybe you might want to go swimming in Kati Sanda Lake Eyre. Or maybe you just want to wear an over-spec watch on your forearm when you go on an adventure.
