We are no strangers in the Sterngrass Hamburg collection. Popular models from the brand, named after their hometown, are available in various versions featuring Quartz or Mechanical Calibers. Additionally, Sternglas Hamburg is available as a time and date model or chronograph. The German brand introduces two top-line models featuring slimmer cases, upgraded movements and updated looks. It’s time to check out the new Sternglas Hamburg Pro Automatik.
Not long ago, Sterngrass released the beautiful Hamburg Automatic Edition Marine. Mike reviewed the watch and was exposed to the great value of the Hamburg Automatic Collection. As he said, these watches are perfect for daily wear and can provide a new collector with a start. With the new Hamburg Pro Automatik model, Sternglas has made them even more appealing for those looking for a stylish Bauhaus-inspired everyday wearer.
The story of Sternglas Hamburg Pro Automatik
The Hamburg series has been the cornerstone of the Sterngrass catalog for the past five years. To celebrate the fifth anniversary, the brand’s team decided to update and upgrade the Hamburg Automatic to create an improved pro version. This new model comes in two variations. The first is the Alabaster version, a classic colorway for all Sternglas models, with a stainless steel case and an Alabaster-Colored (Beige) dial. The second model is a dark green model that combines a stainless steel case, bronze PVD coating and a moss green dial.
I looked into it further for a review. Let’s start with the basics. Both models feature a 42mm case with a 9mm profile (no crystal), 47mm long and 20mm lug spacing.
This case is significantly thinner than the regular Hamburg automatic case, with a thickness of 12mm, and the lagtoo lag also offers a 2mm reduction. The brand also added some fantastic complexity to the case as it mixes brushes and refined finishes. What remains, however, is the distinctive minimalist Bauhaus style.
Hamburg Pro Automatik’s minimalist dial design
The dial design follows a minimalist approach and remains the same. It features an inner hour truck and an outer minute truck. The designer connected the two by creating a long marker that provided both an hour and a five minute marker.
Additionally, the markers of 3, 6, 9, and 12 o’clock feature bright dots that correspond to the room used in pencil style hands. Finally, there is a date window at 6 o’clock. The date disc matches the color of the dial and has black printing, so it integrates nicely. The placement is pretty expensive, but I don’t mind that. It has plenty of space and creates a nice additional design element with a minimal dial design.

When it comes to two different versions, the Alabaster model features black printing on the Beige Dial and Mint-Green Lume. The dark green model comes with a moss green dial and white printing on the orange room.

This version also features a distinctive pop of colours, with orange seconds hand. The bronze, green and orange combination is good for the Hamburg Pro Automatic, but I have to say that the classic Alabaster version is my favorite of minimalist design.
Within the case of both models, there is a Miyota 9015. This automatic caliber runs at 28,800VPH, has 24 gems and offers a 42-hour power reserve. Its accuracy ranges from -10 to +30 seconds per day.
This upgraded caliber is part of the slimming movement of the Miyota Premium Line, so Sterngrass was able to significantly reduce the thickness of the case. As a result, the abrasion resistance is also significantly improved. For the first time, Sternglas chose the case with a sapphire display showing a caliber with a gold Sternglas engraving and its black PVD rotor.
Hamburg Pro Automatik Strap and Bracelet Options
The Alabaster model comes with a vintage leather strap in either black or dark brown with classic stitching in the same colour. Additionally, you can choose from stainless steel Milanese bracelets or branded super slim bracelets in steel. For dark green models, you can choose the same leather strap, but the bracelet features a bronze PVD coating to match the case. For this one model, the bronze PVD bracelet is too much for my taste, so I always go for leather straps. However, when it comes to Alabaster models, the choice is a bit difficult. I like the black strap and the Milanese bracelet so I’ll probably mix both well.
Wearing the Sternglas Hamburg Pro Automatik
On the wrist, these watches wear very well. The slim case makes it easy to wear all day long, allowing you to slide smoothly under the cuff if necessary. One of the things that stood out in the reduction in thickness was the proportion of cases. 42mm watches, these watches are not small. By reducing the thickness, both watches become rather large and thin. It doesn’t have a negative effect on the wearing experience, but it gives them a bit of a saucer look. This may not bother everyone, but it’s worth mentioning to someone who’s noisy about such things.
Overall, wearing these two new Hamburg Pro Automatik models once again showed the great power of a Bauhaus-inspired watch. If you’re a fan of clean and minimalist designs, these two watches are a great choice. With upgraded movement and a slimmer overall profile, Sternglas has made it better updates compared to the standard Hamburg Automatik model.
So for a very long time, it is worthy of a tribute to the brand creating a new version of the Hamburg Automatic to celebrate its fifth anniversary. Both watches are currently available at a special introductory price of 669 euros.
After this introduction period, the normal price will be 699 euros. Considering the update, we can understand the price increase over the standard Hamburg Automatik of 429 euros. For those looking for a daily wearer inspired by the Bauhaus, a step up from the regular Sternglass model, this will become their new favorite.
If you’re in the market for the new Sternglas Hamburg Pro Automatik, you can find two versions on the official brand website.
