In this episode of aBlogtoWatch Weekly, our usual trio of hosts Ariel, Rick, and David are joined by Rob Corder from WatchPro. The show starts with a brief discussion of the various gifts the watch company has given over the years, including Rob’s favorite Oris Bear pajamas. This eventually leads to the question of what Ariel would do if she were gifted a life-sized Oris Bear statue for the holidays. From there, we dive deeper into the economics of the luxury watch industry, with Rob explaining which markets are still growing and why there is always a difference or lag between the reported figures for Swiss watch exports and the actual consumer behavior observable in the local market. The discussion then moves on to why the US is likely to be the dominant market in the near future, and why recent legislative changes could make the UK the best place for Americans to buy luxury watches.
After wrapping up their conversation about all things business-side of the watch industry, the hosts turn to the ongoing faux patina controversy recently featured on the site and try to explain why vintage-inspired lume has become such a contentious point within the collector and enthusiast community. We then learn that Ariel recently slept with her Apple Watch Series 8 on to evaluate its sleep tracking capabilities, and report back on her findings to answer the important question of whether Apple’s latest smartwatch actually knows how much you’re sleeping. After a brief discussion of press tours and watch events, including what their actual purpose is in the modern watch media industry, we take a look at some of the new releases from the past week, including a slew of new watches from Seiko and the limited edition TAG Heuer Carrera x Porsche RS 2.7 watch. After everyone agrees that Seiko’s pricing structure is a bit uneven and that the brand has released so many watches that it can actually be difficult to choose, we take a closer look at the TAG Heuer Carrera in the context of car culture and why vintage Porsches are so popular among modern car collectors. The episode concludes with Ariel traveling to Italy with Jacob & Co. to celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Godfather, a trip Rob will also be attending, and Rick raises the question of whether she should be worried about waking up with the Orris Bear’s head in her bed.
