This is a watch that pays homage to sharks, not sharks. And that’s why “we’ll need a bigger boat.” When it came out 50 years ago, I was too young to see the iconic Steven Spielberg film Jaws of the present, but when I went a few years after its first release, it scared me. There are no large white sharks in the North Sea, but taking dips made them dangerous for years to come. I got through it. As I get older, I’ve seen the films many times and it’s become my top 10 favorite movies to date. The actors are incredible. So I survived watching the movie. I’ve also read Peter Benchley’s 1974 novel, but did you deliberately give Seiko’s 50th anniversary limited edition on your wrist?
A sense of security for people with shark phobia living in Europe and Africa: Seiko Prospex Jaws 50th Anniversary Limited Edition (SRPL81/US$795) is available only in Japan, the US, Australia and Taiwan, and is limited to 5,000 examples. In other words, it’s not all that you might encounter it. One clock washed off on the coast of Fratello HQ is extraordinary. But it gave me a rare opportunity to face old fears and try to overcome them.
Seiko Prospex Jaws 50th Anniversary Edition SRPL81
The Prospex Jaws 50th Anniversary Limited Edition is a fascinating watch for several reasons. First, Seiko decided to use the famous “turtle” as the base for this homage watch. Secondly, the great white shark (Carcharodon Carcharias) eat turtles. However, sometimes the turtle doesn’t work very well. There is a record of the great white shark devouring turtles, but the dense creatures choked in their throats and suffocated the shark to death. I’m not sure if Seiko’s designers thought of this incident when they combined a Joe-themed dial with a 45×47.7×13.2mm steel case, but at an extreme rate with “turtle’s” respect, there’s no need for a bigger watch.
The Prospex Jaws 50th Anniversary Limited Edition is an XL watch you won’t wear every day. It’s not necessarily because of size. Seiko’s Big King Turtle is worn smaller than that. However, with such a special dial, you will choose the moment when you wear something larger than the life of your wrist, even if the blue silicone strap is very comfortable. Anyway, the super-elevated shark deserves a super-eliminated watch, in honor.
A scary dial
When I think of my chin, I think of the book cover and the film poster. It shows that a naked woman swimming in the ocean is unaware of the giant shark rising deep with her mouth open. The dial on the Le Prospex SRPL81 is inspired by the image, but that’s slightly different.
The silver to blue gradient dial shows many similarities to Roger Castell’s famous film poster, but the swimming woman is nowhere to be found. Sharks are only revealed from certain angles and are hidden by embossed water patterns. Remember, death from a deep strike is unexpected.
Details can be found in the points. The red “jaw” wording under the three central hands can be found in the typography of the film’s poster. The caseback shows the scary dorsal fin of a glorious shark laser etch, in addition to the film’s (not large enough) fishing boat. Another detail is the unique edition number of each watch engraved on the back of the screw-in on the 200m water-resistant steel case.
A skilled diver
While this may be a homage watch, it is also a skilled diver with plenty of Lume, an ISO 6425 compliant marker next to the day/date window, and a magnifying glass above sapphire crystal. The inside of the case beats the 3.5Hz automatic caliber 4R36, offering manual winding, hacking seconds, quick set day and date indicators and a 41-hour power reserve.

The box tells you that you are not dealing with ordinary king turtles. Opening the blue box shows SRPL81 sitting on a watch pillow printed on a movie poster. There’s a woman swimming! If you’re a movie fan or a Seikoter Turkish Collector, this watch can be a must-see. Despite its impressive dimensions, the watch is worn very well and is also a fun summer piece. I don’t think it’s your first turtle, it’s your last.
So, does Seiko Prospex Jaws 50th Anniversary Limited Edition SRPL81 bring fear from the past? Wearing this well-run film homage, do you sing “Fairwell and Adyu to you a Spanish fair woman…”?
