Are you familiar with Yema Yachtingraf? Born in the 1960s, Yontlaff was Yemer’s answer to a chronograph built for the importance of tracking yacht races and five-minute countdowns. At the time it was a completely mechanical Valjou 7730 driven chronograph, but in modern times the Yokchin Raw Croisiere is positioned as a more affordable Mecha Colts effort. Brands are often invaluable about icons in design, but today Yema allows Yachtingraf Watch, the favorite Vandal remix of the watch world. A natural step taking into account his destructive style, Seconde/Seconde/ brings a graffiti twist to Yema Yachtingraf, turning it into Yema Yachtingraff.
case
Its stainless steel case has extremely comfortable dimensions, with a diameter of 38.5mm and a thickness of 10.3mm. Suitable for its voyage origins, and despite being a chronograph, it has a rating of 100 meters deep, perfectly suited for recreational aquatic adventures. The finish is blended handsomely, with the bezel and rug hood rendered on a mirror polish, and the case is richly brushed. Seconde/Seconde/ has given a twist on these little elements, so it’s worth paying attention to the pushers polishing the mirror. You’ll find that the coloured rings embedded in the pusher evoke a minispray can set the stage for a graffiti-inspired dial remix.
Dial
The show star, created in collaboration with Seconde/Seconde/, appears to have a slightly plain black dial that is initially erected on a counter that is colored regatta-themed chronograph. However, in a thorough inspection, the countdown timer counter at the 9′ position is hand-drawn, and it appears that the doodle artist has been tagged on the counter, and also serves as a 60-minute timer with the countdown sector. Whether you’re timing the microwave or simply pop a popcorn, it’s visually pleasing and functional. The 24-hour counter is also tagged by hand, with the chronograph hands painted to add more personality. I love the way each counter drips with paint, as it appears to be tagged by a very unique Banksy in the world of watches. Finally, the central time and minutes of hand and application time index are processed with Super Luminova for visibility in the dark.
strap
As a graffiti remix, having a 100m water-resistant Yema Yachtingraff Seconde/Seconde/ on a non-rubber strap would be a criminal. Luckily, the Nautical Source Yontrough is equipped with a black tropical style rubber strap that is perfect for the dial, although there is no graffiti or colored twist on this element. Case matching pin is secured to the wrist via buckle closure.
Movement
The movement of the Seiko VK63 inside may not be the most appealing, but ultimately, this is why the watch can still price it for just $449 USD, even with the hand-drawn touch of Seconde/Seconde/. The VK63 is a Mecha Colts movement, a hybrid setup with battery-powered watches, but with mechanical components that allow the chronograph to act and clean them just like mechanical ones. Naturally, the Seiko VK63 is not on display in its caseback. Instead, there is a solid caseback with sign-off microphone drop phrases from Seconde/Seconde/, “La Croisière, Ma Muse” (The Cruise, My Muse).
verdict
Reminiscing how popular Seconde/ Seconde/’s outing at Furlan Marri is and how collectible the collaboration is, I think it’s very clever that Yema was open to welcoming him and bringing an artistic twist to Yontiraf. This Yachtingraff brings more attention to Yachtingraf and its heritage, only bringing fun topics to the brand with its highly accessible and priced pieces (at least in the context of luxury watches).
