Borna Boschunjak is also his second signature model, wrapped in the colours of the driver’s house, the new Richard Mill RM 72-01 Charles Leclair. This is a rare example of the RM 72-01 in the Quartz TPT, used in Le Mans Le, but is usually seen in the case of metals. The RM 72-01 Charles Leclerc is limited to 150 units and costs USD 330,000.
He just missed out on a victory last Sunday, but Charles Leclerc can at least enjoy the fact that he has a pretty decent watch on his wrist. That said, he has been under Richard Mill’s wings for quite some time, and the new RM 72-01 Charles Leclair is not Monegascu’s first collaboration with the avant-garde brand that continues to strengthen its relationship with Ferrari. Nonetheless, I’m sure it will help his bittersweet second place feel just right in his home race.
The Leclerc variant stands out as it carries the case with RM’s Signature Quartz TPT except it’s a limited edition of 150 pieces, but most of the RM 72S uses metallic or ceramic cases. With a 38.4mm wide, 11.68mm thick and 47.3mm thick lugs you would think they are compact wear on the wrist, but this is the bright white and red Richard Mill we’re talking about, so the subtle delusions are out of the question.
Released in 2020, the RM 72-01 brought an in-house flyback chronograph movement to its tonneau-shaped table, unlike the Vaucher-based RM 11, which built much of the brand’s success. The CRMC-1 is a flyback chronograph that operates on the column wheel, but it is the use of two vibrating pinions that separate it from the rest. One in hours and minutes, one improved the thickness of movement compared to the vertical clutch, affecting the watch’s power reserve even when the chronograph was running.
Decoratively, you can expect a traditional touch (a considerable lack of interior corners) like handmade chamfers, but it is applied entirely in the Richard Mill way. This means a lot of open work of components with a more impressive look, due to the seemingly complex architecture, rather than the finest hand phishing.
As for Leclerc, this is his second signature version with Richard Mille. He wore a limited edition colorway over several race weekends, and although he liked to replace the RM 67-02 Charles Leclair prototype, his RM repertoire also included the “regular” 72-01, RM 35-01 and RM 35-03 Nadal signature models, and the RM 61-01 ultimate model. But this didn’t stop him from indulging in other brands, but like his fellow Formula 1 drivers…
