Despite being Borna Bosniak Reine’s smallest watch, it combines the watchmaker’s admired guilloche work with many hand-finished movement elements. Despite its 37mm size, it’s only 8mm tall thanks to the legendary slim Peseux 7001. A limited edition of 99 pieces, available in five dial finishes, priced at CHF 9,900.
When you think of Torsti Laine, the first thing that comes to mind is a guilloché dial, and for good reason. Unlike traditionally trained craftsmen like Butilainen and Benzinger, Laing does not come from a watchmaking background, but uses his computer science background to streamline traditionally made watches. Masu. The new Laine P37 probably doesn’t have the most complex dial that Laine makes (products like the V38 feature up to three different patterns), but it has excellent proportions, stunning movement finishes, and unique colors. And the pattern makes up for it.
So let’s start with the dial. There are five options to choose from, each with a different guilloche pattern and color. The order in which I present them does not indicate my preference, as they are all equally impressive. However, the Salmon Spider is different as it is the only one with a full index layout rather than Arabic numerals. The “spider” part of the name comes from the buzzsaw-like texture of the guilloché, which looks even worse in the light, looking like a brush of wild sunbeams, but better than that. .
The sky blue twill is adorned with white gold Arabic numerals denoting the aforementioned event, while the heat blue syringe handset matches the salmon spider. This pattern looks like really fine fabric. I really appreciate the minimal branding below the printed sub-seconds.
Now, even though I said I wouldn’t use favorites, I have to give a subtle nod to P37 Ocean Blue Diamond. Here, Laine uses white gold for the numerals and matching white metal for the hands, against a stunning 3D backdrop of interlocking rhombuses (though it’s not specified, so whether it’s white gold or not) (I don’t know). I’m not a big fan of heat blued steel, but there’s something about the roundness of the hands and the Breguet numerals that go well with the silver finish.
If you prefer blue on silver instead of silver on blue, choose P37 Silver Grain. It has a fairly traditional rice grain guilloche pattern, complete with heat blue Arabic numerals and hands. Perhaps the colors aren’t as vibrant as some of the other models on our list, but the size and font choice of the watch lends itself to a traditional look.
And speaking of supreme vibrancy, Murasaki Flame earns that accolade. The swirling engine revs look to me like a soft variant of a jagged spider guilloche, and Lane noted that the transition between blue and purple is the highlight of this dial, but this effect is best seen in still photos. It seems that it cannot be expressed easily.
Without taking away from the stunning dial, the Laine P37’s 37mm case boasts a perfectly polished, no-frills finish. It’s perfectly fine, but it feels a little bland compared to the dial, and I would have appreciated one or two distinctive touches to really differentiate it from the simpler microbranded cases. The dimensions are great, it’s slim at just 8mm tall, and it’s also water resistant to 50 meters, but I don’t think many people will test that.
One thing I can complain about a little is the movement Laine chose for the P37. The architecture is clearly recognizable as a Peseux 7001, but nearly all structural components have been replaced with in-house fabrication and decoration. The two-thirds bridges are new and finished in rose gold and guilloche, while the balance and arms are polished black. The basic specs remain unchanged – the 7001 vibrates at 3Hz for up to 42 hours and is hand-wound – but that’s not the reason to buy this watch.
