Today we’re going to practice the new Ianos Dytis, the final diver in a trilogy of watches from this independent brand. Due to its compact size, Ditis could prove to be the most popular ever. This will never leave the previous release, but the trend towards small watches is clear.
I remember seeing the first ianos release, Abyss, at Fratello headquarters in 2019 shortly after its introduction. It was an impressive watch for several reasons. The unique design sets trends in the next piece, Mihani Kos, and today’s subject, Ditis. The sub-second register, which is rare in divers, has become a styling feature, just like the caseback strap channel. Ditis is the last diver in what Ianos called the trilogy, and if it’s really the end of this genre, it’s a great finale.
Ianos Dytis
Smaller watches have gained traction over the past few years, and Ianos could no longer ignore customer requests. The latest release is the smallest at 41mm, but the previous pieces were 44mm and 43mm. This doesn’t mean that the ditis is small, but it should be more accessible to a wider wrist. The Lug-to-Lug is smaller than the previous model at 49mm, with a thickness reduction of 10% to more than 14mm compared to the Mihanicos.
Titanium is also an increasingly popular material, and the new Ditis uses two different shot-breasted metals on the case and unidirectional bezel. This is the first time Ianos has used lightweight greyish materials, and it gives you a very comfortable wearing experience. But comfort does not mean that ability is suffering. The depth rating is still quite impressive at 300 meters.
Two dial options
Ianos offers two Dytis dial options, both paying homage to the brand’s Greek heritage. The colors of the Greek flag, blue and white, are the only visible shades of each dial. One is bright blue and the other is bold white. The large, bright index reminds me of the Campanelo Petra Diving Stone, which sponge divers use as their weight. The minute tracks are also completely different, with four bright dots between each time marker. In both versions, the white Super Luminova fills blue hour and minute hands. Regarding the bezel, Ianos intentionally chose the naked design, except for the bright pip, to ensure that the dial remains in focus.
The main feature that separates Ianos from many other Dive-Watch brands is its small second display. The design has been changed for each watch model. In Ditis, it changes again and is made in Greek as evil eyes, or maty (μπ). This is a good, immovable symbol and is intended to drive away evil spirits. It sounds like a good token to have while diving. As an aside, I’ve been in my luggage for nearly 15 years and am still typing it!
The strap channel is back. Now there is a fixed strap bar
Ianos held the signature strap channel to the Dytis, but added a fixed strap bar to the lug. The effect is a more tuned and safe fit. Additionally, note that the case is monoblock style, which increases overall robustness.
As for the straps, each watch comes with a single pass with dial-matching rubber and shot-blasted titanium pin buckle. The strap stays on the theme and includes a sponge texture.
Automatic sellita SW360-1
To achieve sub-second functionality, Ianos has chosen the Sellita SW360-1 automatic caliber. This 31 jewel movement was used in the brand’s last model and has been carried over without any changes. This translates to a frequency of 28,800VPH and a power reserve of about 42 hours. Remove the crown and the movement is hacked, allowing for setting and winding.
So, how do you wear Ditis?
As expected, the Ditis is a very comfortable diving watch. The size, lightweight titanium case and soft rubber straps help you wear it like a dream. Additionally, the strap channel maintains the true 14mm thickness of the watch. The shot blast finish is also nice. It reduces everything from fingerprints to glare and noticeable scratches. It gives the watch a very beachy look on the wrist, along with a vibrantly colored dial.
A unique diving watch at an easy-to-understand price
Dytis is available on the CHF 1,850 Ianos website. Although it is not a limited edition, the first 100 of each color will be numbered. Delivery will begin soon as production is already underway. Overall, these are neatly designed watches, perfect for summer and as a more casual everyday choice. Additionally, the combination of lightweight materials and small sizes requires ditis to open up to a wide range of potential buyers. Finally, the fact that they are inspired by a country unknown for their watches also highlights them.
