Awake hits the hand with a Sennmài watch. The pieces with traditional Vietnamese lacquerware dials are hot! Now you can find the latest batch of limited edition releases here. The collection of matte leaves is made up of all models, all containing dials inspired by the landscape of the Earth’s surface from space.
I woke up and had a whirlwind for six months. The Small Independent brand showed its first four sơnmài pieces last September and sold out quickly. Last month, the first two models of the film-related series dropped, paying tribute to Jurassic Park. Today’s new watches have nothing to do with the film, but they embody the inspiration from the subjects around us. Our planets inspire the new Frostrief trio and I think once again these works will be actively received.
Awake Sơnmài Frost Leaves Collection
As you’ll see, the latest sơnmài watches offer more than a new dial color. However, for now, let’s develop the basic specifications. The recycled 316L stainless steel case contains sapphire crystal with a diameter of 39mm, length of 45.6mm and thickness of 11.8mm. It also has a water resistance rating of 50m. Blue, mocha (brown), and green dials are available, representing water, fertile land and forests when viewed from space.
The watch is sized within the sweet spot, with a 20mm wide grey grey to please the crowd, and a nubuck leather strap and skeletonized pin buckle to please the crowd. As for the case, the matte leaf pieces have a polished top surface, which harmonizes with the polished dial hardware. The sides are blessed with horizontal brushing and curved lugs that fit the wrist.
The finely crafted crown has been polished to fit the case. From the side there is a sophisticated awakening logo of relief set on a satin-finished background. None of these features are new to the line, but they show that the details take a little more time.
Dial with depth and new process
The matte leaf dial brings more than a new colour. These are created using the Sơnmài process like in previous releases, but there are new techniques. Chinese lacquer tree, or Rhus verniciflua, provides the base sap of the dial. The craftsman then adds black pigment and silver leaves and then sands them manually to reveal the texture of the dial. The difference between these watches compared to previous releases is the additional layer of silver leaves with more pigments. Again, the dial is sanded, lacquered and hand polished. Each dial requires at least 15 hours of work.

The results are amazing. I enjoyed previous releases due to their deep, textured appearance, but the matte leaf models look much more 3D. In fact, the logo and polished steel index appear to float on the surface. When it comes to color, there are very few things that I dislike about either model. Blue immediately stands out as a safe choice, but green shines and looks like a heavy canopy of Amazon trees. Brown is rarely my choice, but it’s not here because of the dark patch.
More dial details
Awake uses sophisticated steel for the hands and indexes. Each has a molded underlayer of Super Luminova BGW9, which emits a blue glow in the darkness. Again, this offers a floating look that should please even the most avid room fans.
La Joux-perret g101 on display
The automatic La Joux-Perret G101 is expanding into more and more watches. That’s not surprising given the impressive 68-hour power reserve and the 28,800VPH frequency. Wake up and add a nice engraving to the tungsten vibrating rotor and laser-engraved boundary. The movement is finished beautifully, with the Cote de Geneve exhibited through sapphire crystal.
It’s difficult to deny your wrist
The dial is nice and unique on the Sennmài model, but if the watch wasn’t that comfortable, the plot is lacking. The case sits well on the wrist, and the nubuck strap is a rare example of an OEM strap that is not changed after purchase. Above all, the bottomless depth of these dials is impressive, each turning into a conversation piece. What happens if there’s no one there? It’s fine as the wearer is guilty of staring infinitely at the usual pools on each face.
Frosted leaves are limited, but affordable
Again, Awake has released a limited number of these watches. This brand only produces 50 numbered pieces of each matte leaf model. The price is 2,150 euros (excluding taxes) each, which is almost larger than the Jurassic reference. It’s impressive considering the extra time spent on each dial. Again, we predict that these works will be popular and each should sell out quickly. I’m happy to wake up. The company has discovered and reasonably offers the winning formula. Plus, if the release sells out too quickly or the colour isn’t exactly what you want, the brand could soon return with new shades. For now, enjoy these and let us know what you think about them in the comments below.
