That’s correct. The first Omega to break through Earth’s atmosphere is back with the new Omega Speedmaster First Omega in Space Anniversary Series. The original CK 2998, known to collectors as the First Omega in Space (FOiS), was purchased by astronaut Walter “Wally” Schilla and worn aboard the Sigma 7 mission on October 3, 1962. Ta.
This new model has some important differences from the Anniversary FOiS launched in 2012. The main difference is that the movement has been upgraded to a caliber 3861 Co-Axial METAS certified chronometer. It replaces the caliber 1861, but this new movement is the latest evolution of the original caliber 321 that powered the watch Schiller wore in space, and remains hand-wound with a 50-hour Considering how long it lasts, I think it works pretty well. Power reserve, balance spring made of anti-magnetic silicon.
The next noticeable difference is that the traditional black dial has been replaced with a blue-grey dial. This was done to recreate the colors that some of the watches released in the 1960s had, giving the overall piece a subtle difference from other modern Speedmaster series. The color is applied by CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) and has a nice sunray finish underneath.
The 2012 model’s flat dial has been replaced by a stepped dial, giving the watch a sense of depth and texture as it reaches the minute track. The famous Alpha hands remain, but a cookie-like shade of Super-LumiNova that matches the hour markers has been applied to each hand.
The crystal is completely scratch-resistant sapphire, but is shaped to look like hesalite with a layer of anti-reflective coating on the underside, which is expected to match well with the aluminum bezel used here. This is the outside detail. Of course, there are more than 90 famous dots on the tachymeter scale.
Finally, the case received some subtle tweaks from the 2012 version, with slightly redesigned lugs and a width of 39.7 mm. The case back is still solid, with the hippocampus running wild, and above it “THE FIRST OMEGA IN SPACE” and below that “October 3, 1962” engraved.
There are three different strap options here: a flat-link steel bracelet, a brown or black leather strap, and a $400 difference between the bracelet and strap choices.
