Ever since we saw the new Urwerk UR-150 Scorpion at the 2024 Geneva Watch Days, we’ve all been keeping our mouths shut about it. Now it’s ready for its debut with two case finishes to choose from. The UR-150 Scorpion features a new movement and enhanced complications. As always at Urwerk, it’s a feast for the eyes.
When we visited Urwerk for Geneva Watch Days 2024, we saw the EMC SR-71 and spent some time with the watch. That watch was the UR-150 Scorpion, which updated the brand’s signature hour satellite and retrograde minutes. It features a new movement and a more expansive retrograde arc than previous models.
UR-150 Scorpion Dark & Titan
Sergeant Dave and I spent a good amount of time with one of the two UR-150 Scorpions called Dark. The watch has a media-blasted titanium and PVD-coated steel case. The minute scale is also coated and has a concentric grain pattern. The black-coated aluminum hands have red tips and display the current time in the hollow center. The case has raised non-slip edges on both sides and four round titanium clasps at the corners. The lower right zipper has Urwerk’s signature. A countersunk screw crown is located at the top of the watch case.
The second version of the UR-150 Scope Rion is called the Titan. The case is also media blasted, but not coated. The dial is also brighter here, and the tips of the hands are green instead of red. Both watches have rubber straps designed by Kiska and are water resistant to 30 meters.
Enhanced retrograde display
The UR-150 Scorpion effectively doubles the retrograde arc of previous models. Previously, the retrograde display covered a 120° segment. The new model extends this to an incredible 240°. We had a chance to try it out, and the combination of the hands snapping to zero and the satellite hour hand rotating 270 degrees in less than 1/100th of a second never gets old. It is also surprisingly smooth, with no friction or rattling. Best of all, the movement can be set forward or backward, so the dial below the crown features double-ended arrows.
New movement UR-50.01
The power behind this modern complication is the UR-50.01 automatic movement. Twin turbines on the rotor control speed while also providing impact protection. Is this too much? Perhaps, but that’s why we love checking out the new Urwerk. The movement has a frequency of 28,800vph and a power reserve of 43 hours.
evil on the wrist
At 42.49mm x 52.31mm, the UR-150 Scorpion isn’t flashy on the wrist, but it’s not overly flashy either. It’s also comfortable. The curved strap and case design provide an incredible level of wearability, even though they’re suited to wrists larger than mine. Urwerk fitted the watch with a curved sapphire crystal that follows the curve of the case. The same curve can be seen in the hands of the clock. Overall, it is an organic-looking shape and therefore deserves a name from the animal kingdom, such as the scorpion.
The number of each version is limited.
Urwerk will produce 50 of each UR-150 Scorpion model. The PVD-coated Dark is priced at CHF 89,000, while the Titan retails for CHF 88,000. Naturally, these are expensive watches, but they are creative and continue to challenge the way we view watches as a whole. By seeing it in person, I was able to understand the innovation of the design and movement.
What do you think of the Urwerk UR-150 Scorpion’s aesthetic and mechanical approach? If money were no object, would you wear a watch like this? Let us know in the comments.
