The Astron GPS Solar is 13 years old, but due to the constant evolution of movement and design, the technology still finds it attractive. So, of course, I was interested in reading the press release accompanying the release of the edgoogic Seiko Astron GPS Solar Dual-Time Chronograph 5×83 in four new colorways. The Japanese Powerhouse Watch brand offers three new space flight surveillance in the regular collection and a touch of gold in one limited edition.
Seiko’s latest iteration of photovoltaic and GPS network-connected calibers debuted in March 2024. As with Seiko, there are four good things. The Astron SSH158, SSH159, SSH161 and limited edition SSH163 were impressed by the new caliber 5×83, which allows you to automatically connect to your GPS network twice a day. A year later, four new iterations of the Astron GPS Solar Dual Time Chronograph 5×83 appeared. Again, there are four watches. There are unlimited references SSH175, SSH177, and SSH179, as well as the SSH180, a limited edition of 1,500. All four astrons feature titanium bezels with sapphire inserts.
Introducing the edgy Seiko Astron GPS Solar Dual Time Chronograph 5×83 with 4 new colorways
If your quartz watch is not allergic and has some technology, then the Astron GPS solar model should appeal. Seiko’s Caliber 5×83 technology offers a variety of features. Time will be automatically adjusted as you pass through your time zone. When the clock loses the GPS signal and automatically adjusts the time, it will be shown on the dial so that you can manually adjust the time. Furthermore, in the absence of a signal, this movement is accurate up to ±15 seconds per month.
Last year’s Astron Chronograph model stood out for its sophisticated design. Thankfully, the four most recent references have the same angle morphology, brushed surfaces and sharp, refined accents. The 44.1mm titanium case (44.3mm for LE) is 14.4mm thick and 50mm long, but is wearable due to the proportion and weight. Each watch has an integrated bracelet that shows mirror polishing and hairline finishes for a dynamic and refined look. Like a case, the bracelet received a super-hard coating to keep the watch sharp for as long as possible. This appears to be constantly getting worse, especially for titanium, when there are more scratches than steel.
Four striped dials in four colors
So far, nothing new about these watches. But the dial underneath the dual curved sapphire crystal is easy to read. The three Astrons participating in the main collection are SSH175 with a blue-gray dial, SSH177 with a gray dial, and SSH179 with a black dial paired with the black super hard coating on its case and bracelet. The fourth iteration, the limited edition SSH180, has a navy blue dial.
The limited edition SSH180 is quite different from the other three watches. The prominent rose tone accents on time markers, bezels and other parts highlight their status. There is also a dodecagonal bezel instead of round one. Therefore, it is 0.2mm wide. The bracelet is also different. Its central link is shiny black ceramic. Overall, the four colors fight for attention, but it could prove a little more, but you might have to look at this titanium, black, blue, rosy cosmos in metal to pass the final judgment.
Like a diamond
What all these new Astrons have in common is the diamond cut markers on the 12 o’clock and 6 o’clock subdials. Additionally, all dials display dictation layouts of horizontal 3D stripes and caliber 5×83. This includes the 6, 9, and 12 o’clock subdials. The main time is displayed in the center, but the 6 o’clock sub-dial shows the hours and minutes in another time zone. However, if you hold two pushers for 3 seconds, the two time zones will switch locations, so to speak. Also, when you start the chronograph, the 6 o’clock sub-dial becomes the total amount of elapsed time and minutes. The AM/PM indicator is located between 4-5 o’clock just above the date display.
Pricing and availability
All four new Astron models will be available this month. The Astron GPS Solar 2025 Limited Edition SSH180 costs 3,400 euros, while the SSH179 costs 3,400 euros. The Astron GPS Solar Dual Time Chronograph 5×83 SSH175 and SSH177 cost 3,200 euros.
What do you think about these new Seicos Astrons? Do you wear it, or if so, which one would you choose? As always, please share your thoughts in the comments section below.
