The names are the same, but their looks are very different. A hands-on experience with the new Rado Captain Cook high-tech ceramic chronograph revealed strong similarities between the black and rose-tone model and the green brother made from plasma high-tech ceramic. With a matte black ceramic case decorated with rosy PVD-coated steel turning bezels, the Captain Cook chronograph version looks metropolitan. However, dark green is a new colour in the collection, giving a more outdoor feel to your scratch-resistant watch. Previously, Captain Cook Chrono was only available on a steel case and two counters. Now we are seeing the debut of two three counter models with ceramic cases in the best Rad tradition.
Essentially, they are the same, but they “dress” completely differently. The new Rado Captain Cook High-Tech Ceramic Chronograph will debut in two different versions. However, the matte black ceramic iteration with a touch of souve pink gold colored PVD (ref. R32190153) and dominant dark green version (REF. R32189313) has some in common. That’s where we start.
New Rado Captain Cook Practice with the High-Tech Ceramic Chronograph
Within both versions of Captain Cook High-Tech Ceramic Chronograph, Rado places the caliber R801. Based on the ETA A31, this automatic movement is an evolved version of the reputable ETA 2894. Rado places the Dubois Dépraz Chronograph module on top of the movement and turns it into a chronograph. It bears at a 4Hz frequency, features a co-magnetic nivokron hairspring and has a fully wound 59-hour power reserve. The 37 Jewel’s movement measures 28.6 x 6.6mm, and its basic functions include displaying hours, minutes, small seconds and dates.
For chronograph functions, we start with a counter for a few seconds and a 30 minute period at Central Elps. Previously, the Captain Cook chronograph had a two-counter layout with a 6 o’clock index style/shape date window. However, these two newcomers have a third subdial in the six, incorporating a red date on a white background and a 12-hour counter on a chronograph. Adding the latter gives the watch a more modern look than its rather retro two counterparts.
Both iterations show the “300m/1000ft” language on the printed white rad and Captain Cook logo and dial. The hour and minute hands exceed the time index. This is finished with white Super Luminova for easy readability like a hand. The hands of the chronograph have a red chip to simplify the identification after seconds, minutes and time. The moving anchor symbol at Rad at 12 o’clock is a familiar sight. Rotate with a synthetic ruby back plate. At the edge of the dial is a subtle, tiny, fine track, with the perimeter of a 60-minute carved bezel, with markings filled with engraved rooms.
In the case of Captain Cook
Although not in the same color, both new Captain Cook iterations are the same size. The watch comes with a 43 x 49.8 x 16.2mm high-tech ceramic case rated 300m deep. A more common feature is a box-type sapphire crystal with a ceramic bezel insert and a three-row bracelet, a screw-down crown and two screw-down chronograph pushers, and a reflective coating on each side.
The gorgeous captain cooks black and roses
Black and Rose Tone Rad Captain Cook High-tech Ceramic Chronograph offers a high-end look with a metropolitan feel. The watch has a polished ceramic bezel insert and polished central link on the bracelet, in contrast to the matte ceramic case and the outer bracelet link. Open and close the bracelet with a titanium butterfly clasp. It’s no surprise that the ceramic use makes both watches feel light, “warm” and even silky soft. Additional soft and rich details are the rosy bezel rims, hands, indexes, crowns and pushers.
The deep black dial features a white Super Luminova with sophisticated rose tone applied indexes, and also has a rose gold colored PVD coated rotating anchor symbol.
Outdoor green captain cook
Spending time in a plasma oven that was hotter than the sun, the green dial version of the ceramic showed a silver-gray metallic tint. This hue matches the steel bezel, crown, pusher, rhodium coloured hands and indexes. A gray ceramic base combined with a refined dark green ceramic bezel insert and a deep green dial created an outdoor look. Like its black siblings, the green chronograph features a titanium case with sapphire crystal that allows you to observe the automatic movement.
Wear both versions of the new Rado Captain Cook High-tech Ceramic Chronograph
It’s a bit cliched to say that the clock is bigger or smaller than that. For the two newer versions of the Rado Captain Cook High-Tech ceramic chronograph, I’ll say this anyway. The 43 x 49.8 x 16.2mm watch belongs to the size L section. However, due to its lightweight ceramic, the watch weighs about 160 grams, which also has a positive effect on wrist size. On my 18cm (7.1 inch) wrist, despite the very large case length, they are not too big.
Another cliché is to make you look slimmer when you wear black. This applies to watches as well. The black watch appears to be smaller than that, and the 43mm black Captain Cook high-tech ceramic chronograph actually wears small and worn based on its weight and appearance. You can also ask, “How small? Like a 41 or 40mm watch.” But I dare not put numbers in it. Maybe you should go and try it for yourself.
