When you buy a high-end mechanical watch, you might expect a few things. For example, a fine guillotine dial or a hand that sweeps smoothly. British watchmaker Garrick certainly knows how to deliver both of them. However, the new S3 Deadbeat seconds do not get either. But what you get is a beautifully finished openwork dial and a second hand to play tricks on you. We’ve seen both of them from Garlic before, and now they’re gathering on the same watch.

Garrick’s S3 Deadbeat seconds are the logical step after successful GPHG finalists S3 MK2 and S2 Deadbeat. The former came with a grand openwork dial, while the latter was characterized by its quirky enthusiast complexity. Let’s see how these two combine in the new Garrick S3 Deadbeat seconds.
Garrick S3 Deadbeat seconds
Order your new Garrick S3 Deadbeat seconds yourself and you can choose from 904L stainless steel or gold cases. Regardless of the metal, the watch’s diameter of 42mm and thickness of 11mm includes the top and bottom sapphire crystals. The internal movement is an example of manual winding, so there is a neat sized crown for winding and setting.
The front of the movement is completely exposed, showing 21 gems of caliber and part of the diagonal bridge. Of course Garrick’s signature Trinity Freesprung Balance and its bridge flaunt at 6am. There’s more gear and bridge to get your attention, but the oversized balance still has the power to pull you in. It also eats gently on a handmade circular German silver chapter ring, with nice and easy-to-read marks that make it easy to convey time.
There is also a power reserve indicator at 2am. This is useful for watches with a hand-wound movement and a 45-hour power reserve.
Movement of internal DB-G07
Inside – or on the go, there is a caliber DB-G07 built in-house. It operates at a frequency of 18,000vph. However, if the deadbeat hand ticks once per second, you won’t notice it. This move is also very accurate as Garrick tested and adjusted it to ensure a daily variance of less than +3 seconds. This is within the COSC standard of +6/-4 seconds.
When it comes to the finishing touches, Garlic can be adjusted to your liking with custom color options. Additionally, all bridges and components on the movement are manually wrapped, allowing frost, grain or mirror polish. You can also choose from gold, silver or rhodium wheels and numerous motifs. The single piece German silver chapter ring can be filled with any color. Finally, there are many different types of hands to choose from, but blue observatory style hands look great and their shape makes them easy to communicate away from the background.
As good as it gets
Unfortunately, I haven’t seen the new Garrick S3 Deadbeat seconds in real life yet. In other words, I have never seen a suspended movement of the Deadbeat central hand. I also wanted to see a high level of finish and how all those wheels would change to move those hands. However, from the photo it appears that the seconds of the S3 Deadbeat are already decorated with fingers. When buying a watch at this price from an independent watch manufacturer, this is as good as it gets. The company’s move with its quirky deadbeat second hand is a technical feat, while the high-level manual finish is cake icing.
The Garrick S3 Deadbeat second priced at £40,000 for steel and £47,500 for gold, excluding VAT. All watches have been ordered and the current production time is approximately 20 months.
