The Mont Blanc 0 Oxygen Series celebrates explorers and climbers. These robust watches often feature WorldTimer features and a second 12-hour display. As with today’s 1858 Geosphere 0 Oxygen Mount Vinson Limited Edition, it also brings impressive dialmaking techniques and advanced materials.
With names like Montblanc, it makes sense that the brand pays homage to the brave explorers who culminate in the world’s tallest and most challenging peaks. I have reviewed some of these works in previous articles and have always been impressed with the details. Additionally, the layout and functionality of the dial comes across as unique. This is a great attribute among the seas of similar clocks. The latest 0 Oxygen Mount Vinson, shown in Watches and Wonders 2025, is even more special because of its material, color and finishing techniques.
Honoring Reinhold Messner and Seven Summits
Reinhold Messner is considered the world’s largest climber. He peaked all 14 peaks above 8,000 meters without supplementing with oxygen. Messner also inspired the Mont Blanc 1858 Geosphere Collection and several limited editions. The latest Geosphere 0 Oxygen Mount Vinson also pays tribute to Messner, but focuses on key achievements. In 1986 he appeared at the peak of Mount Vinson in Antarctica, becoming the first to climb seven summits without supplemental oxygen.
Due to Mount Vinson and its polar location, the mountain is characterized by ancient glaciers. Over time, the oxygen in the ice dissipates, contributing to the blue color. This plays a big role in the latest limited edition watch.
Montblanc 1858 Geosphere 0 Oxygen Mount Vinson Limited Edition
The latest Geosphere 0 oxygen model brings a diameter of 43.5mm and a thickness of 13mm. The reason for a 1.5mm increase in diameter in a typical 42mm model deserves more explanation (we’ll soon get to it), but that comes down to the material. Regarding depth ratings, Montblanc guarantees 100 meters. Montblanc also case these watches in a vacuum and provides a certificate that focuses on the 0 oxygen process. The brand says this helps the components resist corrosion and wear. Finally, the watch comes with a new rope textured turquoise rubber strap and a push button folding clasp with a fine adjustment system.

Glacier-like case
The watch has a titanium case core, but the mid-case uses specially developed materials. Montblanc chose to replicate the glacier surface with a blue composite made of quartz fiber, aluminate base fiber and caco3 (Calcium Carbonate)and light blue resin. Unlike what you see on a watch, it looks like a natural marble stone. To the left is the white outline of Mount Vinson, glowing blue in the darkness. The bidirectional titanium bezel includes anodized aluminum inserts with bright compass points.
Dial with Gratté-Boisé
Métiers D’Art – or clever dials are becoming increasingly popular, but rarely seen on sporty watches. Montblanc has introduced the Gratté-Boisé to this Mount Vinson version of the dial. Wood is used to rub the brass dial underneath to create textures that mimic ice. The brand says it is a difficult process of over 30 steps and takes four times longer than a standard dial. Next, apply turquoise lacquer to create a smoky effect.
In terms of functionality, 0 Oxygen Geosphere Mount Vinson packs a lot of information into the dial. But it still maintains a high level of readability. Two gloves are displayed in regulator style. The upper gloves are, of course, in the Northern Hemisphere and include the Greenwich average time line. The map below is the southern hemisphere. Both rotate counterclockwise and display time around the world using a 24-hour scale around the perimeter using day/night indicators. All seven summits and Mont Blanc are highlighted with dots. The date is on the right side of the dial, and the subdial on the left shows an additional 12 hours of time zone. Polished metal cathedral hands show time and minutes and carry the filling of Super Luminova.
A caseback worth watching
The 1858 Geosphere 0 Oxygen model usually features a stunning caseback, and this Mount Vinson version is no exception. Montblanc has mastered the in-house skills to complete multiple processes. Laser creates decorative engraving and surface finishes. Impressively, the color of the caseback is also achieved by accurate titanium oxidation by laser. In other words, there are no paints, enamels or other colors that will deteriorate over time. The titanium caseback also includes names of seven summits: Denali, Everest, Mount Elbras, Pankac Jaya, Vinson, Kilimanjaro and Aconcagua.
Inside, Montblanc uses the familiar MB 29.25 automatic movement. This is the 26 Jewel Serrata SW300-1A with an in-house WorldTimer module. It is frequently 28,800VPH and has a power reserve of approximately 42 hours.
Mount Vinson is a special watch with limited production
Like most of Reinhold Messner’s tribute works, the Geosphere 0 Oxygen Mount Vinson is a limited edition. A total of 986 pieces, a reference for 1986, will be created at a price of 9,200 euros. Is this inexpensive? No, however, the watch has more innovative materials and manual finishes than most previous 0 oxygen models. Plus, look at the colour! Blue cases are not rare, but this composite offers one of the clearest finishes on the market. Overall, I praise the uniqueness of this release from Mont Blanc, and while it may not appeal to everyone, it is a great homage to Reinhold Messner’s achievements.
