It’s hard to believe MB&F has been in business for 20 years. But here we are with Mark, who was part of a new wave of independents that changed the look of the Auto Hollogary. The futuristic and funky design is a hallmark of MB&F. Today’s latest legacy machine 101 (LM101) EVO Watches continues this vibe.
Perhaps over a decade ago at a salon QP event in London, I first tried to create MB&F. Peace alone redefines how I saw the watch. This was a very styled object on the wrist with countless exposed components and a completely unorthodox display. At first I wasn’t quite sure. Since then, when I was asked about the most highly progressive designs, MB&F almost always jumps to the top of the list. Like the Bulldog, I enjoy the brand’s more bizarre shapes, but today’s LM101 EVO model is what I think when someone mentions MB&F.
New Legacy Machine 101 EVO
MB&F first released the Legacy Machine 101 in 2020. The watch was hung with the brand’s distinctive bridge and the balance wheel just below the highly domed sapphire crystal. In the 40mm case it was also one of the smallest pieces in the range. So, is the latest release just a colour variant? No, the LM101 EVO, as the name suggests, is an evolution of the original and brings a very practical update.
The LM101 EVO holds lagtoo lugs with diameters of 40mm and 49mm. The 16.5mm thick watch has a bold stance, but it is also expected to be a crystalline look like MB&F and its foam. The update comes in the form of an integrated rubber strap with a water-resistant rating of 80m, under-screw crown, bending shock absorber and folding clasp. Legacy machines may not look like everyday watches, but this is intended to be worn. In addition to this, the case is made of durable, lightweight titanium.
Two variants
The Legacy Machine 101 EVO is available in two different colorways. Each has a main plateau treated with chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of either salmon or green. The twin black subdials are decorated with hands filled with Super Luminova. One indicates the hours and minutes, while the other indicates the remaining power reserve. As for the straps, the salmon variant comes with a gray rubber variant, while the green model has the same strap, but it’s white.
Impressive movements decorated by Voutilainen
“F” in MB&F stands for “Friends”, in this case Kari Voutilainen is involved. The LM101 EVO boasts an internally developed movement with Voutilainen, who is responsible for finishing. This gives you a traditional look of caliber through the Sapphire display in Case Back. It features numerous NAC black bridges with Geneva stripes, angulares and a variety of other technologies. In addition to the 60-hour power reserve, the frequency of the 23-jewel movement is 18,000 VPH. It consists of 233 components.
Legacy Machine 101 EVO Pricing and Availability
MB&F quickly points out that the LM101 EVO will be participating in the regular collection, rather than a limited edition. Again, brands are small producers, so don’t expect these to get flooded into the market. At CHF 62,000 (without VAT), the latest release from one of my favorite watch brands is a rare treat for those with deep pockets. Again, after 20 years of business, MB&F is still making special watches that look like most of the rest. For more information about the new EVO, please visit the official MB&F website.
