One of Jamie Weiss IWC’s outstanding watches and Wonders 2025 releases, Ingenieur Automatic gets a stealth all-black ceramic look. It features a slightly larger 42mm case and an integrated bracelet made from black ceramic. Unlike other current Ingenieur models, it features the Calibre 82110 with a 60-hour power reserve.
Ceramic integrated bracelet watches are rage right now, so it’s amazing how long it took IWC, the company that pioneered the use of zirconium oxide ceramics in watchmaking, to join the party. Because the Schaffhausen brand has just launched an astonishingly monochromatic, fully ceramic take that stands out as one of the most stylish watches produced in recent memory.
This is not the first time I’ve seen an Ingenieur covered in ceramics. For example, Ingenieur AMG Black Series Ceramic Ref. The IW322503 also boasted a black ceramic case. However, the previous ceramic Ingenieurs pair only with fabric or rubber straps, so this new Ingenieur Automatic 42 Ref. The first of the IW338903 brand.
As the name suggests, it slightly increases the 40 of the existing steel and titanium Ingenewor Automatic 40 with a diameter of 42mm and a thickness of 11.6mm (40mm and 10.8mm). However, the case and bracelet are made entirely of ceramic, so even the titanium Ingenieur Automatic 40 Ref is pretty light. IW328904. I had this on my wrist so it’s amazing how easy it is to wear. It’s very bangle-like and not top heavy.
In fact, it’s impressive how much of this IWC is ceramic. Not only the case and bracelet ceramic, but the case back ring and crown are also made from ceramic. The sapphire crystal is not held by a metal ring, but both the front and back are pushed directly into the ceramic parts, but the watch retains a water resistance rating of 100 meters. Of course, this movement is not made from ceramic (it has ceramic components!), and the butterfly clasp is titanium, but there are still plenty of ceramics here.
IWC has chosen the full ceramic via Ceratanium for this release. Because the brand wanted to maintain the sophisticated level of mixed finish found in metal Ingenieurs. IWC was absolutely successful with that memo. The case and bracelet make the mat almost visible at several angles, and the subtle polished bevel create a play of glittering light. A black grid dial and a black date window add to the murdered charm.
Another notable difference between this reference and the 40mm Ingenieurs is that they take advantage of different movements. It is equipped with a caliber 82110 instead of a boumatic base caliber 32111. This is a decision influenced by the need to fill that 42mm case. You can get a glimpse of it at the highly on smoked sapphire exhibition through the smoked sapphire exhibition.
It’s an interesting choice. Caliber 82110 has half of the power reserve with caliber 32111 (60 hours vs 120 hours, but 60 hours isn’t bad). Either way, it’s not a contract breaker. It’s more than a capable move, and the main attraction here is the construction and demonic look of this watch.
Overall, Ingenieur Automatic 42 Ref. The IW338903 is an excellent addition to the INGENIEUR series, and stands out from the pack at the same time that IWC released its first complications in the Modern Ingenieur collection, among the novelties that turn other headlines over. I think the Ceratanium Ingenieur is pretty close to my dream watch, but this black ceramic number is not a consolation award. It’s a sophisticated, dapper and extremely easy to wear. This is a knockout piece that reaffirms the excellence of IWC’s materials science.
