Fergus Nash This is the fourth release of the Hublot Big Bang Zermatt Hublot hasn’t used steel for the Hublot Big Bang Zermatt since 2018 The Matterhorn appears on the running seconds subdial
With its Hublot Express cable car, Hublot-sponsored mountain restaurant Chez Vrony, and gorgeous wooden boutiques in the center of town, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Zermatt is basically a Hublot company town. In fact, ski enthusiast or not, Zermatt is one of the most breathtaking places in the world and boasts a proud Swiss identity, just like Hublot. This Hublot Big Bang Zermatt marks the fourth time that the brand has decided to pay tribute to the town with a set of special edition watches that combine the modesty of a stainless steel case with all of Hublot’s luxurious, sporty appeal.
With a population of less than 6,000 and over 2,000,000 visitors each year, it’s easy to imagine how busy the town of Zermatt can be when surrounded by mountains. The main attraction is the 4,478-metre Matterhorn. Located on the Swiss-Italian border, it’s the sixth highest peak in the Alps and barely noticeable compared to the giant peaks of Tibet and Nepal, but its iconic peak is a near-perfect pyramid. This makes it an ideal location for ski resorts, luxury restaurants with mountain views and high-end shopping options.
The Hublot Big Bang Zermatt’s main distinguishing feature is the placement of the Matterhorn-inspired small seconds subdial, which allows the hand to rotate far enough to not obscure the view. The silvery sheen of the grey sunburst dial is a deliberate nod to schist, the metamorphic rock that makes up much of the Matterhorn. The final Easter egg is the use of titanium screws in the steel case, a nod to mountaineers who use lightweight titanium tools.
Apart from the above features, the Hublot Big Bang Zermatt is offered in different versions for men and women. The larger model reaches a diameter of 44mm due to the stretched ears of the Big Bang case, but its thickness of 14.6mm is reasonable considering the automatic chronograph movement inside and its water resistance to 100m. The smaller version is the more flashy option, with its diamond-set bezel and diamond hour markers that give an icy glow to the already cold mountain scenery. With a diameter of 41mm and a thickness of 12.75mm, it fits very well on slim wrists and does not sacrifice any of the specifications of the other model. Both use an ETA-based chronograph movement with a power reserve of 42 hours and a frequency of 28,800vph.
