In this episode of aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Ariel, Rick, and David are joined by Andrew from Watchfinder & Co. to take a deep dive into the world of smartwatches. With the recent release of a new generation of Apple Watch and the Apple Watch Ultra attracting a lot of attention from traditional collectors and enthusiasts, the hosts begin the show by addressing the question of whether the Apple Watch should even be considered a watch at all. From there, the conversation moves on to why the new adventure-ready Apple Watch Ultra will appeal to so many people who previously had no interest in traditional smartwatches, and whether its design is influenced by traditional Swiss watchmaking. Given its more durable construction and ability to double as a full-fledged dive computer, the hosts address why many people tend to inherently trust Apple over traditional watchmakers when it comes to things like depth ratings, and why Apple is so good at creating intuitive, easy-to-understand interfaces.
The new generation of Apple Watch is arguably the biggest news in the world of connected devices, but it’s not the only option available in this field. So our four hosts discussed other luxury smartwatches currently available, such as those produced by TAG Heuer and Louis Vuitton. After discussing why these models play different roles in the broad field of connected watches, Ariel offered some insight into why he decided not to pursue a smartwatch, even though Casio’s G-Shock series is considered a digital watch suitable for rugged use. After pondering the question of whether wearable connected devices could dethrone the Apple Watch in the near future, the hosts moved to the other end of the watch spectrum, talking about the ultra-luxury model Credor Eichi II and its different approach to luxury, before returning to the topic of connected devices with the unconventional and irreverent Sequent Smart(ass) Watch, made in collaboration with seconde/seconde/. To conclude the show, the hosts address some of the various shortcomings of smartwatches, detailing why connected devices such as the Apple Watch aren’t currently fully solar-powered and discussing when brands might be able to produce models that can charge autonomously.
