We’ve all heard the phrase “time is money,” but what if you could express that visually? Leave it to the team at IFL Watches to add a fun twist. For their latest release, the Stockholm-based brand has whimsically brought this concept to life with the dial of their Citizen Tsuyosa Automatic. This is a limited edition of this watch by IFLW, and it once again demonstrates the perfect blend of classic style and playful dials. Let’s take a closer look.
In case you didn’t know, we love special dials IFL Watch Team Get creative. The result is the special IFL Watches x Fratello CasiOak collaboration “Moonlander,” which was announced two weeks ago. This watch perfectly illustrates how much detail and care the artists on the team put into creating the dial. For the brand’s latest release, IFLW artists wanted to visualize what it’s like to say “time is money.” But, as you might expect, it was done with a smile. This statement piece is a reminder to use your time wisely, because you can’t get time back.
Citizen Tsuyosa Time is money concept
This active reminder to make the most of your day begins life as the Citizen NJ0150-56L. The blue dial version of the brand’s popular Tsuyosa Automatic is a stylish watch that offers amazing value for money. I had the opportunity to review it alongside the black dial version a little over two years ago, and came away impressed with both.
But it turns out the artists at IFL Watches are using standard dials as a canvas for their art, resulting in timepieces that are completely different.
As we discussed in our previous article on IFL dials, the point isn’t just to paint a beautiful picture. First, when viewed from a distance, there should be a clear contrast between the colors. In this example, we see the contrast between the blue of the base dial and the money and hourglass, which are mostly gold and brown hues. When you zoom in, the details of the picture should tell the story.
As you can see, the translation of the concept “time is money” is portrayed very literally. At the base of the dial are coins and jewels. On the left, a pile of coins sits on top of an hourglass representing the passage of time. On the right, we see a pile of paper money and coins flying away as time passes.
Details of Tsuyosa NJ0150
Zooming in even further, you can see the incredible detail that went into the creation of this dial. As with all limited edition dials, each one is unique as they are all hand painted. In this case, every dial is sure to have people looking at your watch and asking what it represents – not just what it represents, but what “time is money” means to you.
Just to be on the safe side, the Citizen Tsuyosa Automatic comes in a 40mm stainless steel case that is 11.7mm thick and measures 49mm from lug to lug. The case is primarily brushed, but the polished bezel provides a nice visual contrast. The crown is located at the 4 o’clock position and is nicely integrated into the case. The dial features large hour markers with white luminous paint and a date window at the 3 o’clock position. Citizen has fitted a magnifying glass onto the crystal to make reading the date easier.
Tsuyosa exudes a sense of luxury
This watch comes on a President-style stainless steel bracelet that is very flexible and sits comfortably on the wrist. The bracelet’s combination of brushed and polished links adds a premium shine. The bracelet has a fold-over clasp with push button release and several pin holes for fine adjustment.
Flip the watch over to reveal the in-house made Citizen caliber 8210. This automatic movement runs at 21,600vph and has a 40-hour power reserve. Citizen claims that it has an average accuracy of about ±20 seconds per day. The brass movement is very basic in look and finish, so the lack of a case back display could have been avoided, as it takes away from the premium feel of the rest of the watch. That said, the real fun of the watch is on the dial side.
Final thoughts on IFLW Shimin Tsuyosa’s “Time is Money” concept
Overall, this is a fun addition to IFL’s rapidly growing limited edition portfolio. As the brand explains, it reminds us to keep chasing our dreams because we only have a limited amount of time to make them come true. It’s a great quote to live by, and it’s up to you how you make your dreams come true. Whether you’re a Gordon Gekko-esque money is the dream or a more relaxed approach where money makes dreams possible, this theme fits right in.
