Honest question: Why do people like to live in the sky? Is that because Saros’ annual calendar and travel clocks with ring commands are complicated part of watchmaking? Perhaps it’s a distinctive dial layout? Or is it because if you’re wearing this 42mm watch with this 42mm precious metal, anyone within a 100m radius knows you’re wearing a costly Rolex? I’ve never felt the need to “ride” the most complicated watches in Rolex’s current collection, but this Monday I’m about to reach the air with a Rolex sky in yellow and everrose gold.
Sky Dweller first took off in 2012, and it feels like the watch is a new kid on the block. Get it when surrounded by “sub”, GMT Master IIS, Daytonas. This watch combines the Rolex Saros annual calendar with GMT features in a very original way. The Ring Command System works to allow two time zones, dates and months to be shown simultaneously, allowing adjustments by turning the grooved bezel. To read about it here, you can learn exactly how it works.
I’m about to reach the air along with a yellow and everrose gold Rolex Skydweller
The two vacant resident models introduced by Rolex last year were not entirely new. The full gold jubilee bracelet was new, but the automatic caliber 9002, for example, wasn’t. This chronometer certified movement is an updated 2023 version of the Caliber 9001. Equipped with a Chronergy Escapement, it offers a 72-hour power reserve with an average accuracy per day.
So, in reality, the only new thing was the change in the bracelet, but what a change. If the 42mm watch with a busy dial and the cyclops on top were not able to catch enough eye, Rolex had already offered jubilee bracelets to residents in the sky, but it was steel that fitted the steel model with a white gold bezel. The two colours of perfect gold are new and will make residents shine more than ever in the sky. The wealth of gold is not for the faint hearted man. Whether it’s the equivalent of rose gold Rolex (Everrose) or yellow gold, the sky’s people are not watches for introverts.
They definitely appreciate the quality, comfort and foldable OysterClassp of the build with the EasyLink Comfort system. This clasp allows for 5mm on-the-fly adjustment without the need for tools. Introverts also appreciate the ceramic inserts that make the bracelet feel soft and robust at the same time.
Is the empty resident… clock?
Those who live in the Ralex sky are impressive watches in multiple ways. The 42mm case has a lug spacing of 14mm thick, 50.5mm long, and 21mm long. Like most Rolexes, it looks bigger than that, making the people who live in the sky a massive clock. It’s too big on my 18cm wrist and looks even bigger. It’s also because of the plentiful gold. Yellow Gold Reference 336938 with a white dial (56,800 euros) is the most traditional look version, but it’s too big for the classic. Everose Reference 336935 with Slate-Gray dial (60,100 euros) is a more modern creation. The dial is less straightforward than the white one, but it is combined with a grooved rose gold bezel and a jubilee bracelet, making the visual effect comparable to the white dial version.
So, who is the best person to wear a resident in a full gold sky? This is a bigger than life watch and therefore perfect for basketball great Michael Jordan and rapper DJ Khaled. They are both seen wearing blue sky residents, so references to these full gold jubilee gear should also be their preference. Other well-known wearers of Sky Deller include UFC champion Conor McGregor, actors Will Smith and Tom Cruise, basketball All-Star LeBron James and comedian Kevin Hart.
What about Evo living in the sky?
The large, rude empty residents have a candid look that their ingenious interiors are often overlooked. How can a Rolex set it straight? Functional evolution does tricks. The Calibre 9002 has a diameter of 33mm. This means it’s likely to fit in a smaller case than, say, a 42mm case (for example, a 40mm case). The thickness probably remains roughly the same, but that’s not a big deal in proportion.
Also, the EVO, which I have in mind, has a flat-side RLX titanium case so there is no problem with comfort. The Titanium Oyster Bracelet Rolex is built for the amazing Yachtmaster 42 of RLX Titanium. Imagine a matte black dial with easy-to-read white indexes, lots of bright materials to illuminate the cockpit and cabin, and some color accents to make all the features easier to read.
The Sky-Dellerer Evo attracts Rolex fans who fully appreciate the brand’s technical qualities. These people don’t want a big, shiny watch, but instead appreciate the functionality of travel watches. Finally, while using the center hand to display local time, there is a resident wearer in the sky who realizes that the watch displays a 24-hour incremental out-center rotating disc and can read the time in a different time zone. The fact that dates, months, hours, minutes, seconds and additional time zones are all visible is finally noticed and evaluated. The same can be said for the SAROS calendar. This requires only one date adjustment per year on the first day of March.
From gorgeous giants to agile travel tools
In its current form, the sky dweller is a mile-high watch rather than a fellow instrumental traveller for discerning watch enthusiasts. But if it differs slightly, it could definitely be the latter. It could also be a future classic. That being said, don’t raise your hopes. It’s not clear what kind of announcements Rolex will make in the upcoming version of Watches and Wonders. No inside information came to me about the possibility of a titanium empty resident. But remember, the titanium yachtmaster also came out of nowhere. With that in mind, I look forward to being amazed by the next generation of sky. what about you?
