Borna Bošnjak Ahci member Machiel Hulsman develops an innocent, lasting calendar that is controlled solely by the crown. In a compact 39mm case, simple permanent one uses a pair of sapphire practitions to cleverly display the moon and day with case bands. Hulsman has only made 12 of this Sousscription series, but the 13th and final prototypes are auctioned for charity.
If you are not thoroughly involved in independent watchmaking events, the name you could easily skate without realizing is Maciel Halsmann’s name. In that case, that’s a shame, as the banker-turned watchmaker has quite a few accomplishments in his name. What makes Huslman’s rise to respected horologist even more impressive is that he became a hero from scratch in just five years, quit his day’s job and make everything from scratch.
2025 marks the release of his new Suzuripto watch, the Hulsman Easy Perpetual. It was born as a solution to a common complex nature and was developed with Hulsman’s Tri-Axis Tourbillon and 50 Complication Movement Projects. It appears that Mr. Halsman has many talents (and time) in his hands, and we can (hopefully) hope for a world record in the near future.
Face what makes easy, lasting ticks. The exhibition casebacks make it clear that there aren’t many in reality. Especially considering how robust this movement is. But you have signs of jumping year, month and week, which helps clean up the dial. The basic feature of the movement is the functionality of a permanent calendar, but it’s all built-in idiot prevention that makes it impressive.
For example, the crown has three positions: winding (one-way), time setting (bi-way), and calendar setting (bi-way). These three configuration modes are all you need as all calendar features remain synced. Overshooting the settings makes it easy to return. The crown stem is also enhanced, and if the date is not set correctly, the exercise will not be able to leave the calendar setting position.
Let’s take a closer look at how Halsman makes use of the free space on the dial. It’s not a simple design, but it’s very clever. Work outside the center. As I know, I have to spend a little time on my hands. The flowing surface is just stunning, and the super sharp little counterweight is cherry blossoms on top of a stylized spade shape. The inner scale shows the minutes, with blue droplet markers and railway tracks separated from the date ring. This is where a simple, everlasting genius begins.
Note the two cutouts that take up space at 2am and 4am. To make sure there were no mistakes when reading the date and obscuring the openings, Halsman jumped over them with his crescent hands as he proceeded from 4 to 5, 7 to 8. Finally, surrounded by a polished steel ring are two openings below 12 o’clock. When the power reserve is soaked low enough, the left turns red and the other serves as a day/night indicator.
The space under the pinion is reserved for a simple permanent visual center, and it is the balance that floats. Hanging under the sapphire bridge, this allows for a gorgeous escapement, its blue steel components, and an unobstructed view of first-class hand fishing. The balance is fleece pulling, and it beats at 21,600 VPH for up to 90 hours.
This would have been enough for me to call this one of my favorite releases of the year, but Halsman uses prisms and laws of physics to drive it home. For a simple, permanent, two sapphire pisms are embedded in the case band and displayed in a convenient but subtle way, refracting the image of two calendar discs that can be seen through the caseback.
Speaking of this case, it is 39mm in diameter and only 9.5mm thick, and is surprisingly compact in terms of movement innovation and complication levels. Hulsman will offer dials in all three more customizable types, including regular gold, white, yellow, rose, etc., depending on the final customer’s wishes.
We are looking forward to the projects that Halsman has been working on for a while, but it is clear that the development of these ultra-complex pieces can be allocated to production runs. project. If you have a spare 140,000 euros to burn holes in your pocket, you know where you’re spending it.
