The new Grand Seiko SBGY040 and SBGW321 are limited edition watches made specifically for the European market. Like most of the brand’s limited releases, these are inspired by Japanese nature. The garden, especially the pond and its colorful koi fish, help define the artistry of the dial.
Grand Seiko has successfully incorporated natural scenery into its dial design. Today’s new SBGY040 and SBGW321 are inspired by one of Japan’s most idyllic features: traditional gardens. Ponds and koi fish are typical within the garden. The colors are deep and rich, perfect for the background of a clock face. Let’s take a quick look at these parts before returning to the follow-up practical article.
Grand Seiko SBGY040
The Grand Seiko SBGY040 is part of the Elegance collection and features one of my favorite case designs. The slightly C-shaped case measures 38.5mm wide, 43.7mm long, and 10.18mm thick. In this limited edition model, the case is crafted from 18K rose gold and comes with a blue 19mm crocodile strap and matching 18K gold buckle. Grand Seiko equips the watch with a domed sapphire crystal and specifies a 3 ATM water resistance rating.
The gentle ripples of the pond garden are reproduced on the dark blue dial. The pattern is detailed and resembles enamel work. Like gentle waves, the dial reflects light, creating shades of light and shade. Wave designs aren’t new for watch dials, but this delicate interpretation feels fresh. The dial features gold dauphine hands and applied indexes.
Inside the SBGY040 is the in-house 9R31 Spring Drive caliber. The 9R series movement celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, and the 9R31 is a fitting achievement. This hand-wound movement is accurate to within ±1 second per day and has a power reserve of 72 hours. Grand Seiko will only make 20 of these watches, which will be sold exclusively in European boutiques. Price is €31,100/£26,890.
Grand Seiko SBGW321
If the dark waters of a pond inspire a watch, what about the pond’s most memorable inhabitant? The Japanese carp, or nIshiki carp Nishikigoi have provided visual stimulation and relaxation to viewers for centuries. The bright red dial of SBGW321 features elegant fish scales. The polished silver dauphine hands, applied steel indexes and gold seconds hand complement the intricate dial.
The stainless steel Heritage SBGW321 model features a classic 44GS case shape and measures 36.5 mm wide, 42.7 mm long, and 11.55 mm thick. It also features a box-shaped sapphire crystal. Unlike the SBGY040, this item has a depth of 10 bar, but you will need to change from the 18 mm black crocodile strap before swimming. For those who haven’t tried this case yet, it fits snugly on your wrist and feels like a vintage 60’s model. Moreover, this special dial makes it even more attractive.
This model uses Grand Seiko’s familiar hand-wound caliber 9S64. The 24-jewel movement has a 72-hour power reserve and is accurate to +5/-3 seconds per day. A stainless steel screw-down case back protects the movement and is engraved with 300 unique numbers for each watch. The SBGW321 will be available from authorized European dealers for €6,100 / £5,920.
final thoughts
We will deliver a practical review of the European limited models of Grand Seiko SBGY040 and SBGW321. I think it’s dazzling when you actually see it, so I’d like to take a picture of the dial under good lighting if possible. For now, as long as you’re in Europe, you can check these out at your local Grand Seiko boutique.
