It’s no secret that we are Speedmaster fans here at Fratero. Our founder, RJ, is an avid collector of these chronographs and the heart behind #SpeeDyTuesday. However, not all speeds are created equally. Today we are looking at some of the best modern Omega Speedmaster models. RJ, Thomas and Nacho are tasked with selecting the top five favorites. Now, as mentioned before, we focus solely on “modern” models. This means only models that have been introduced or available over the past 25 years. Watches have been around for nearly 70 years, but for a quarter century there are still plenty of choices left for us. Omega has produced countless special and limited editions over the last two and a half years, so we are truly spoiled for choice. However, before you get into it, make a quick look at your wrist.
Wrist check
There’s no surprise here. RJ was prepared with a heavy hitter celebrating his 50th anniversary of his Gold Speedmaster Apollo 11. Was it called an episode here? Certainly, but the show has to continue. Still, to be fair to him, this is an absolute grail-worthy speedster and has a lot of influence.
Next is Thomas wearing a reliable VPC type 37HW. The thing about creating the ideal take on Gada Watch is that you’re supposed to wear exclusively to other things. I’m sure Thomas is as enthusiastic as we do, and hopes to get a practical prototype for the next 39VM. But for now, it’s a trusted everyday wearer who keeps him and his company.
Noticing the topic of discussion today, Nacho was prepared on his wrist with his Speedmaster 3570.50.00. Inspired by some of the speeds he saw at the Omega Museum last week at Beer, he discontinued the OEM bracelet in favor of the black NATO strap. The straps of the astronaut’s choice were velcro strips, but some of them reminiscent of their appearance with the black woven straps.
Fratello Talks: The Best Modern Omega Speedmaster
What are the top 5 Speedmasters released in the last 25 years? That’s the question I asked us for the show this week. As always, we don’t give it all here. But let’s take a look at one of each man’s five picks in the spirit that gives you read something so far.
Starting with RJ, he chose the Omega Speedmaster Professional Silver Snoopy Award. 311.32.42.30.04.003. If you want to read all about what makes this watch (and all other Snoopy Speeding) special, check out this article. This particular model was one of the early models that went beyond the mission patch on the dial. There are plenty of details that make you feel special, but from afar it remains relatively subtle.
Here is one of Thomas’ picks, the Speedmaster 3594.50.00, also known as “Replica.” Introduced in 1997/98, this model was produced until 2003, and is technically based on the standards of a “modern” Speedmaster. I’ve seen this countless times on Rex’s wrists, and it certainly looks good and speedy.
And finally, Nacho chose the recently introduced Speed -Master Pilot Flight qualification ref. 332.10.41.51.01.002. 2 As a quick registration, this model is chorded with nachos. Its fully brushed case, excellent functionality, improved water resistance, and perfect size are very difficult to discuss. It has a rough black dial and plenty of colorful accents that feel like a gauge in the airplane cockpit, which is fascinating.
If you want to check out the remaining 12 picks, join us in today’s episode. We’ll be sure to let you know your favorite modern Speedmaster in the comments below and enjoy a new episode of Fratero Talk next week!
