Fortis is a brand that is always on the move. Over the past six months, new versions of the Novonaut N-42, a range of new models with the Vagabond V-40 GMT, have been seeing even more new movements. For the latest release, Fortis introduces two new Flieger models with two sizes of black cases. But the biggest news is that all four watches are equipped with the new Fortis Manufacture Werk 7 developed with La Joux-Perret. I had the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in all four variations.
It’s probably not surprising that the Novonaut N-42 is my favorite Fortis Watch. I spent quite a bit of time with different stainless steel and titanium variants, but they never fail to impress me. The modern version of the brand’s famous astronaut chronograph has brought Fortis classics to great new heights. However, this latest release requires shifting focus to the brand’s Flieger collection. This is a series of modern pilot watches developed with the help of the Swiss Air Force. The result is a line of watches that clearly focuses on excellent readability and practicality. This time, the brand has raised the standard for Freeger with Werk 7. This modern movement marks the beginning of a new era of the Fortis Flieger collection.
Details of the new Fortis Flieger model
Let’s start by explaining the specifications of these watches in a short way. All four have black DLC coated stainless steel cases. The two larger F-41 models range in diameter, 12.5mm thick, 52mm from lug to lug, while the smaller F-39 models can reach a width of 39mm, thickness of 12.5mm and length of 50mm. All four clocks feature a two-way 24-click DLC-coated bezel on a 12-hour white scale to show a different time zone.
Two of four versions – one in each size is a house matte black dial with white numbers and markings. Each dial features a black outer ring that holds bright brick hour markers and minute tracks. Additionally, the brand’s signature Fruit Orange has some high contrast details. As you can see, all models have a 3 o’clock date window with a black date disc with white print.
Fortis also uses a second pair of DLC Freegers with a Moss-Green dial. These dials have the same black outer ring with bright time markers and a white printed minute track. Overall, the black model is appropriately stealthy, while the two green models have a more Army feel to them.
The new Fortis Werk 7 was developed along with La Joux-Perret
Among the cases of all four watches is the brand new Werk 7, German, “Caliber 7”. This move is a step up from the previous Sellita SW200-based UW-30 movement. Fortis has teamed up with La Joux-Perret to develop a new Werk 7 that will raise Power Reserve to 70 hours.
In addition, the new caliber offers variable type regulations. This allows for small adjustments by moving small weights to the balance wheel rather than changing the length of the hairspring. Finally, the new movement is very robust. This is the result of the balance and double fixation of its oversized bridge.
This new movement is visible through the sapphire windows in the stainless steel caseback. The caliber received a gunmetal finish and customized rotors in addition to structural improvements for its robustness. Plus, the brushed blast finish fits perfectly with the watch’s practical look.
Come to think of it, Fortis completes the aesthetics of two mission black models with an upper and black hybrid strap with a rubber base. The tactical green model straps combine a brown green fabric upper with a black base. Regardless of the size, each of the four versions costs 4,100 euros, a huge increase from previous Flieger products. However, new calibers are also important technological advances, justifying price increases.
Wearing the new Fortis Flieger F-39 and F-41
Once placed on the wrist, all four models prove to be comfortable everyday wear despite the length of the rug to rug. One thing that quickly stood out to me is that the 41mm version is better overall proportion than the 39mm version.
Visually, the 41mm model is well balanced and attracted me to them. Despite the seemingly difficult 52mm lug-to-lug, the Flieger F-41 variant wears very well on my 18.5cm (7.3 inch) wrist. This is because the straps are very comfortable. They are sturdy enough to balance the wrist watch, providing comfort and flexibility.
In the great Fortis tradition, the watches are very well constructed. They feel very solid on the wrist and everything is beautifully designed. A great example is the bezel. Turn them and you can hear and feel the well-defined clicks.
The combination of audible and tactile feedback leaves a big impression every time. I’ve come to expect this from Fortis, but it’s always impressive. Even the rising price increases that offer this kind of quality, there are simply not many brands.
Choose your favorite Fortis Flieger model
After spending a few days with all four new freeers, I preferred the 41mm F-41 model. However, if your wrists are small, the 39mm F-39 version is the version you will check out. Overall, when it comes to choosing your favorites, I found the tactical green version of the F-41 to be the best. Visually, I think it’s the most appealing and vibrant option.
But if you like to dress most (or all) in black, the mission black model with orange details is also a great option. Despite these watches being designed as tools, it sounds a bit easier to make them a matter of style.
Again, please be honest. The overwhelming majority of these Fortis Flieger Watches will become everyday wearers for those who never reach the cockpit of a fighter. In that context, choosing a color is as simple as the colour that suits your style.
But don’t be fooled as all four models are more than a pilot’s watch that can undoubtedly run to the highest aviation standards when tested. These four Freegers are produced in 100 runs each, and they become limited editions, allowing you to quickly find your way to Fortis fans.
These four new watches are another step in Fortis’ unendowed improvement journey. That’s something I admire so much and I can’t wait to see what’s next.
