Tudor Black Bay 58 (formerly “58”) was a smash hit when it debuted in 2018. At Watches and Wonders this year, the Victory Formula received an update. So now is just as good as considering picking up one of the previous versions on the second hand market.
The Tudors Black Bay 58 is the brand’s modern success instrumental watch. It was widely praised for its release in 2018. Tudor has reduced the successful Black Bay Dive Watch to the diameter of a more compact and classic 39mm case, reducing the successful watch to a more manageable 11.9mm thickness. The brand did this without compromising the core specifications of the caliber. This still provided 70 hours of power reserve and chronometer accuracy.

However, I wasn’t very enthusiastic about the combination of Tan/Beige Lume and Gold-Tone accents. For these critics, the watch leaned a little too far into the vintage look. Obviously, many enthusiasts in the market were eager to see something with a more modern, fresh palette. Then, in 2020, a blue dial version was released with clear, white markers. The watch was an absolute success for Tudor, causing widespread waiting lists (relatively unprecedented for the brand) and prices on the bloated secondary market.
The Tudor Black Bay 58 In Blue captivated the right balance of attractive latest specifications, good overall value, and a nod to vintage design and timeless colorways. There were dozens of comments on many introductions and hands-on articles exploring this new colour option. The YouTube creator jumped at the popularity of watches and rushed to release a video about it. Overall, the Blue Tudor Black Bay 58 appeared to represent a snapshot in time amid COVID, which enthusiasts seem to focus on their hobbies. Apparently there was a proper social media frenzy surrounding Tudor’s latest smash hit.
My experience with Tudor
In this context, the Tudor Black Bay 58 was named blue. I tried it at a store in Sydney and instantly appreciated the size and relatively thinness of the case. I also appreciated the colour as I returned to the legendary Tudor submarine used by Marine National. Like everyone else, I was not a fan of the beige room and artificial aging that I saw in the black dial version.
Since 2020, we have seen numerous Tudor Black Bay 58 models, including 925 silver and bronze ones. However, Tudor innovated and released new models such as The Small Tudor Black Bay 54 and the updated 41mm Black Bay, so the 58 line began taking the rear seats. Some people assumed it would disappear slowly. However, Tudor appeared to rest this theory by introducing GMT to the Black Bay 58 case.
Tudor Black Bay 58 “Mark 2”
With this year’s watch and wonder, we finally saw the revitalized Black Bay 58. In addition to the colour of Burgundy, there are small ergonomic changes that should have a major impact on the ownership experience. These include an updated clasp with micro adjustment, an option that has it on a Tudor five-row bracelet, a smaller but more nerf crown, and a gripper bezel. One other major change is the adoption of meta-certified calibers within the New Black Bay 58. This represents an improvement in accuracy and coercivity with a 5-hour power reserve (70-65).

Overall, the impression of this new updated Black Bay 58 seems rather positive. However, the watch currently costs CHF 4,150 for a three-row bracelet and 4,250 for a five-row bracelet. This contrasts with the CHF 3,400 asking price for the three-row bracelet when the original debuted. Certainly, we must consider the inflation since 2018 and how much we willing to pay for enhancements within the new generation. Thankfully, the Black Bay 58s cost much less in the secondary market. There are many examples of Chrono24, such as ChF 2,000-2,500.
Should I buy it on the second-hand market?
Tudor’s recent changes to the Black Bay 58 will undoubtedly filter to other colors and variants over the coming months or years. This means that now might be the perfect moment to pick up one of the originals. why? Prices in the second-hand market are flat and appear to represent a great value for money when it comes to solid sports watches from recognized brands.
Not only does the Black Bay 58 feel like a great watch, it has also been seen that Tudor models have gradually increased their prices before. Let’s take a look at the first generation of the 41mm Black Bay, also known as the “smiley” of curved text on the dial. These watches were discontinued as part of an upgrade to Tudor’s Black Bay lineup, making them more like collector’s items. The same can be said about Tudor’s North Flag. This sees a bit of a passionate comeback as a quirky expression of Tudor’s efforts to be bold with its design.
The idea of conclusion
Are these previous examples from Tudor a sign that the Black Bay 58 “Mark 1” represents a good purchase on the second-hand market? I think so. But another reason I’m confident in recommending the Black Bay 58 is because, as a long-term owner, I know it’s just a great watch. Whether or not the value increases is next to the point. If you’re grateful for the design, now seems like the right moment to consider picking up a second-hand Black Bay 58.
