Last year, citizens debuted a series of super titanium chronographs with integrated bracelets. The watch was well received because of its appearance and affordable price. Since then, the brand has officially changed the name of these chronographs to Zenshin Senkei. Four more references will take part in the collection, but as we see, the new colours are just part of the story.
It’s great to see citizens making news with new watches available worldwide. For years, the brand felt very focused on the Japanese market, and international releases were relegated to low-cost department stores. But, something has changed over the last few years, and we are all benefiting from a new global strategy. Last year, citizens released a series of super titanium chronographs with textured dials. Now the brand is back with four small pieces with slightly different designs and new dials. Let’s take a look.
New Citizen Zenshin Senkei Chronograph
Last year’s chronograph gave a positive impression, but if there were unified complaints it was about diameter. The watch was 42.5mm wide and despite the case only 44.5mm long, I wore it large. Obviously, citizens are listening to the comments and implementing the changes. The new Zenshin Senkei chronograph has a diameter of just 41mm and there are no lug-to-lag measurements yet, but it is unlikely to be larger than last year’s model. With Duratect Tic, super titanium that can withstand wear-resistant scratches remains the material of your choice. Sapphire crystal is part of the package, and the watch has a depth rating of 100m.
Edge-like case and bezel
In addition to the small case, the new Zenshin Senkei Chronograph has a 12-sided bezel rather than a round one. The cases and lugs also contain more prominent and sharp edges than in the past. When it comes to bracelets, the only option is the three rows of super titanium accompaniment. Citizens make a nice and comfortable bracelet and add a push button folding clasp with manual pinhole fine adjustments.
How about those dials?
First of all, the Zenshin Senkei chronograph is available in four colors: white, black, green and blue. Unlike last year’s textured wrinkle finish surface, the new pieces have a grid-like pattern. These models feature three subdials, but the 60-minute chronograph counter and 24-hour register match the color of the dial. The contrasting sub-second register is located at the bottom of the dial with a framed black and white dating wheel with a slightly off-kill diagonal appearance at 4:30.
Otherwise, the watch will have a large polished central hand. The hands of the hours and minutes contain plenty of bright materials. This is replicated with the refined time marker applied. Returning to the dial, the colors are consistent. However, in the distance, we can see evidence of the eco-drive solar element at the center of the dark reference.
Eco-drive enhances Zenshin Senkei
As expected, the eco-drive movement is under the solid titanium screw case. The Citizen’s Solar Quartz Caliber B620 guarantees a grab-and-go experience with a 9-month power reserve after a full charge. It is as accurate as expected, with an accuracy level of ±15 seconds per month.
Thoughts and pricing
It’s hard to dislike these new Zenshin Senkei chronographs from the citizens. The design could be a slight ape to certain integrated bracelet sports watches from Audemars Piguet using a new dial, but to remain relatively clear, there is still ample of 70s citizen design DNA. An attractive runner with a bracelet that should be this priced will be a victory ceremony. But what is the cost? Just 469 EUR / £449 / US $650 net one of these daily drivers. Additionally, they are now available online and at authorized dealers.
