Cartier is fully established itself as a watch worn by all cool cats, especially when it comes to the brand’s smaller, more delicate products. Whether that’s Rihanna’s Panthere, Tyler’s… Anything, or our own Zac Brass Santos Demont. It was nice to see Cartier fix the small edge of their Santos de Cartier offerings in this year’s watch and wonder. So it’s no surprise that I jumped at the opportunity to spend time, especially considering that most people seem to have missed out on that fair.
Modern memories
As a historic design house, Cartier doesn’t lack iconic shapes, but that’s not without challenges. Recognizable watches like Santos should act as collections. This means molding and resizing the key formula without much change. Naturally, this isn’t necessarily without negligence, but I really believe the new Santos de Cartier is a great example of doing it right. Unless you see it side by side, can you share it with us immediately, separate from the media? Apart from missing a hand for a few seconds, I don’t know if I can. I’m glad that the designers of the brand have not compromised.
I am very well blending that signature element, as long as I say that the little one looks the most proportional of the three sizes. The shiny gold bezel is surrounded by the brushed top of the case before taking it to the side where the wide round chamfer falls straight down. The steel screws on the bezel give way to the gold screws on the bracelet, and really bring home a two-tone look that works very well here. Paired with a small size and a square shape, I can’t get the galve out of my head, but I think the percentage of bezel flowing through the case works better than the wide, flat look of the galve.
The hands of the two blue swords are subject to timetelling and vary sufficiently to make them easier to read with the sunburst dial. And speaking, this is where you find the most notable difference in its large Santos stabiliser, featuring a white oparin dial. As I mentioned earlier, there are no seconds. Also, considering that Santos Small is quartz-driven, no “automatic” read dial can be found. Finally, rather than hiding in the “V” in “VII”, the secret Cartier signature moves to the 10 o’clock marker.
There is no sacrifice to quality of life
I said this watch reminded me that it reminded me of Santos Galve several times, and I made sure I wasn’t alone with some members of the T+T team on this idea, but I was very wrong. The new Santos Small may continue some of its aesthetic heritage, but it certainly does not translate the fascinating Jeanlines of the era. In fact, in that case, the bracelet link, which fits in particular, remembered surprisingly robust emotions despite its small size, but that meant the wearing experience was completely different. I was hoping it would be a low and loose seat, but the weight made it even more comfortable and even more comfortable to the wrist.
To use Zach’s term “robust elegance,” this is not as versatile as it is only 30 meters water resistant. It softens the sporty nature of some of the other Santos de Cartier models, although there are many challenges that most people encounter every day. My point is further proven by the accompanying calf leather straps. It’s plain, with vintage stitching and not reminiscent of a sports watch. Thankfully, it still incorporates an excellent quick change system that is especially useful in the solid gold section.
Begging for the stack
One of the qualities that all little Cartiers share (at least in my opinion), they look incredible pairings with a lot of accessories. For some, this is a blatant asp on any watch, not to mention the precious metal Cartier. But the little nicks and scuffs these pick up are intertwined with fabric and love bracelets, telling the owner that he respects the watch for what it is.
Although Cartier looks less exclusive to Cartier, it is something Cartier does much best, and this petite Santos follows the standard, especially with larger wrists with empty space.
Close thoughts
I haven’t met the same fanfare as the headlining tank Agichet, but Santos de Cartier excites me the same way, but for another reason. Like the ultra-limited Privé model, the chances of being seen in public are very high if each owner is ultimately to remove them from the safe. However, watches like Santos are made to be worn every day, and as a result, they find themselves far more approachable. That being said, pricing is pretty tough, especially considering the 10% premium for automatic variant commands, but rising prices are merely a reality in today’s landscape.
What Santos Small is doing is enough to justify the asking price of many people and I fall into the same camp. The case is completely proportional. It is undoubtedly the best in the Santos de Cartier lineup, with the two-handed, organized dials that allow you to sing with alternating silver and gold finishes on the case. It’s only a matter of time before Timmy C swings on the red carpet…and now it’s the day…
