Borna Bošnjak Bulgari and Mb&F are working together for the second time, with Serpenti taking the most avant-garde form ever. The Bvlgari X MB&F Serpenti is available in three metals, each showing off five uniquely shaped sapphire crystals that will give the snake its presence. This coordinated Serpenti is limited to 33 units per metal, limited to USD 148,000 in titanium and steel and USD 170,000 in red gold.
Bvlgari is not a brand that leaves the location of Auto Hollogary, but these high-end pieces usually take on a rather restrained styling, and their mechanical complexity makes the story go a long way. The Trighton Shimming Octo model, released in 2024, is extremely wild even without any elaborate gem setting in any way. This is where Bvlgari jewelry know-how appears and there are rare restrictions. It helped Serpenti continue his push into the more persuasive mechanical watchmaking realm. By chance, the brand already had a collaborative relationship with Max Buserzer. For Bvlgari x Mb&f serpenti, it is a Bvlgari icon that Mb&f got and went to town, and it’s not really surprising when minds like Max Büsser and Fabrizio Buonamasa Stigliani come together.
MB&F has already had experience animating animal-themed clocks, but the steps from amphibians to reptiles were not that simple. Büsser explains: Nevertheless, the biogenesis design of this watch has created a major challenge not only in terms of case but also in terms of movement. Buonamassa Stigliani’s wish was to bring the snake’s eyes back to life. They are also painted in the room, giving the eyes of the snake a creepy glow in the darkness. And at the heart of it is MB&F’s distinctive oversized flying balance wheel, which slowly slaps over the escape wheel.
With the exposed “eyes” and “brains” in front, the case tapered in the form of tears, with two crowns protruding at the end, just like those on Viper’s triangular head. But at the same time, the Bvlgari X MB&F Serpenti also incorporates a touch of car that the designers didn’t originally intend. The rear sapphire crystal has two striped cam cover-like bridges on each side, allowing the Louvre to appear to you as a glimpse into the centre of some high-strength beasts.
There are three colorways, each available in a different metal. The stealth black PVD coated steel is given a red highlight, the cool gray tone of titanium is given blue and clean, while the 18K red gold case gives the right green addition. The case is the widest at the front with a diameter of 39mm, with a maximum thickness of 18mm and a lug-to-lug 53mm. It’s not that these measurements are something that should really be focused on when it comes to MB&F products, but Hey Ho.
If you’re an MB&F fan, looking at the hand-wound caliber without a sophisticated case may give you some hints about the brand’s adapted to Serpenti. The inflated eyes under the balance wheel, and the centrally mounted barrel, refer to the HM10 Bulldog, but MB&F says that important changes had to be made to accommodate the new case. First of all, there is no jaw specifying a power reserve, and it is replaced by a simple pointer on the caseback, but the beat rate remains at a stable 2.5Hz with a 45-hour power reserve.
