Borna Bošnjak The Ace of Hearts celebrates the three-year partnership between Behrens and Konstantin Chaykin. There are three material options, a well-ventilated Joker “Dial”, and the movement appears to be hung in the trapezoidal case. Despite the exterior and internal movement, Ace of Heart is surprisingly affordable, starting at USD 7,500.
While his watch admiration makes some of the most impressive achievements in modern watchmaking, Constantine Chakin is certainly best known for his Joker Watch. That’s why he still chose it as the theme for one of his boldest fugitives – creating the thinnest clock in the world with thought – so it’s not surprising that it’s a design that he chose to put their spin on. The new Behrens x Konstantin Chaykin Ace of Hearts is a trapezoidal follow-up from the pair’s 2022 collaboration, now in the Chinese brand’s ultra-light cases, with Chaykin’s grinning face being even more airy than ever.
Located in the top half of the dial are two eyes that use Behrens’ floating display system to communicate time and minutes in the regulator layout. On top of the bridge on their bridge, they are minimal power reserve indicators, with Schnoz pointing to escape and second smiles. This is my favorite part of the design due to its fascinating operation. You will notice that printed numbers in seconds do not follow a completely circular path. And thanks to the snail cam, which is partially visible from the central cutout, the hand of seconds actually outlines an oval orbit.
The 2022 Behrens and Chaykin collaboration featured a very similar dial layout, and the movement was based on the Sellita SW200, but also included rectangular seconds. For the Ace of Heart, Behrens is introducing a new in-house movement, the BM07. The focus here was clearly on the unique display and seconds. The 4Hz beat rate and 46-hour power reserve are decent, but certainly not groundbreaking. Thank you for what Behrens did with the design of the movement. Highly polished bevels, matching high polished screws, crown wheels and ratchet wheels, the outline with raised brushes separate from the frosted surface with thinly polished bevels. Most, if not all, of the decorations are almost certainly machined, but given how valuable this watch is, I don’t think it’s a surprise.
Apart from the Chaykin-inspired design, this watch is truly a Behrens effort, which also means good value. This design is actually based on Behrens’ Ultralight. This is a watch with a low 11 gram variation and requires an asymmetric shape for optimal layout of featherweight components. The ace of hearts can easily fit in a square (or round) case, but the trapezoid works very well with its overall appearance.
For me, one of the aces of Heart’s strongest points is its selection of ingredients. Depending on your preference, you can choose from grade 5 titanium, SPSCF carbon composite, or synthetic sapphire. Considering the width of 37mm and thickness of 7.9mm, the starting price at USD 7,500 is pretty surprising. Plus, given that he wears a slightly creepy and skeletalized clown on his wrist, it is water resistant to 50 meters despite the potential lack of diversity.
