We’re used to seeing the BA1111od’s name on a complicated but surprisingly accessible watch, whether it’s one of the affordable tour bilons or crazy things like CHPTR_δ. However, the new BA111od Chapter 8 offers watches at the entry level that tells the brand new direction and is causing brand signatures. Chapter 8 actually includes two models, a simple three-hand and a moonface, but both share the same case and overall aesthetic.
Dial
Sports the dials of modernized sectors, Chapter 8 3 Hand does exactly what you say with tin. It’s a lack of extra design options and provides that information in an easy-to-read manner. There are three colorways (black, silver, beige) (or sand (if you ask BA1111od) – featuring a mixed finish that emphasizes the design of the sector. Like most other models from the Swiss brand, the hands are lancet style, with rounded, refined finishes suited to indexes and rehears. For everyday wearers, the complexity of the date is useful, but it is hard to believe that the purity of the layout would have been better preserved, especially if it was omitted in contrasting white.
Regarding the moon faces in Chapter 8, the uniformity of the sector dial is replaced by an asymmetric layout featuring a round opening date of 4, small seconds of 7, and 10 moon faces. The BA1111od balances this by shifting the branding at 2 o’clock, but is not afraid of subdial instability. In fact, they are highlighted in contrasting colors.
case
To fully integrate them in one collection name, BA1111od chose to use the same 41mm case for both variants in Chapter 8. Although one measurement in itself is not ridiculous, considering the 12.75mm thickness and 48mm lugs and lugs, consider dress-style daily watches effectively. Nevertheless, it is certainly an option for those who prefer watches in larger sizes. It’s whether it’s a stylistic choice or whether you have a larger wrist, but as you get closer to that 10mm mark, I think it’s even more convincing, especially for time-only models.
As for case design, it’s a very simple and thorough event, but some of its thickness is reduced by the concave bezel. For those looking for a sparkly touch, the thyme-only variant is also available in a rose gold PVD finish. The 4 o’clock crown is also not typical in both its position and size, but should provide ample grip for manual winding, while adding a brand touch with the embossed ba1111od logo.
strap
While that may seem a bit trending, Chapter 8 is another new release available on Milanese’s mesh bracelet. The flat and polished link adds a truly elegant touch and is available in both 3-hand and moon face models. For those who prefer something more traditional, the BA1111od also supplies grey nubuck leather straps with folding grips, but replacing them isn’t too difficult. Both the bracelet and strap are equipped with quick release spring bars, with the lug width being 20mm.
Movement
To tolerate Chapter 8, BA1111od went to Soprod, the movement producer of Festina Group. For time-only models, the venerable ETA 2824 clone P024 is a sure choice. So you can expect similar performance and specifications: 4Hz beat rate, 38 hours of power reserve and automatic winding. As for Moonface, the story of the origins of its Soplod movement is a bit interesting. The C105 is a modular movement, and SOPROD’s proprietary A10/M100 is used as a base. This is equivalent to SPEC’s ETA 2892, but not designed. However, looking at the Seiko 4L caliber reveals Sopod’s original inspiration. Spec-wise, expect a 42-hour power reserve and a 4Hz beat rate using Glucydur balance and Inca Block shock protection.
verdict
Whether it’s a moonface or a three-hand, Chapter 8 fits neatly into the niche that is filled with the present-day offering of the ba1111od. Some of the brand’s premium Holloggery complications may not have an immediate amazing factor, but it avoids it with integrated, but subtle design choices, including its concave bezel and competitive pricing. They also offer things that are becoming increasingly rare in today’s markets. This is a dress watch that is over 40mm.
