Just over a year ago, Daniel Roth presented the completed Tourbillon Suscription watch in yellow gold. After announcing the revival of the Daniel Roth brand in March 2023, the Tourbillon Suscription is the first project and the model that debuted from the Daniel Roth watch brand in 1989 (Tourbillon ref.C187) It was a sign of respect. Now, after releasing the Tourbillon Rose Gold for the last time, Daniel Roth returns with another release in August. Introducing Extra Platform Subscription.
Purchasing additional plats
Fittingly, this model is based on Ross’ second watch, created a year after the introduction of the Tourbillon C.187. The extra platform subscription also includes new moves. Caliber DR002 is the second installment of the revived LVMH brand. As with the previous DR001 tourbillon movement, master watchmakers and founders of La Fabrique du Temps Michel Navas and Enrico Barbagini were responsible for its development.
Homage to Ross’ second watch
With the Extra Plat Suscription, Navas and Barbagini pay homage to the original Daniel Roth model from the 1990s, with a simple two-piece design, all executed to the highest possible standards, all done in-house at La Fabrique du Temps. We would like to offer you a hand clock.
When I visited La Fabrique du Temps a few weeks ago, Daniel Roth Extra Plat Subscription was waiting for us in the spacious conference room. It was hard to resist picking it up before photographer Max took the photo (fingerprints are a photographer’s worst enemy). I chose the rose gold Daniel Roth Tourbillon as my nominee for the 2024 Readers’ Choice Award (click here), but I prefer this new Extra Plat Souscription. I love clean and simple watches, and I prefer two hands on a dress watch to three or more. As soon as Max finished taking pictures, I picked it up and wrapped it around my wrist.
To the highest standards
At just 7.7 mm thick, the Extra Plat Suscription is a real gem. The case design of this watch is close to the original, but has been reworked to perfect the lugs etc. Besides Daniel Roth’s typical double oval case design, it’s the Clous de Paris guilloche that makes me smile. Hand-turned using a 1935 straight-line engine, this dial is simply amazing. This work is carried out by the artisans of La Fabrique du Temps. Guilloché alone requires approximately 10 hours of work per dial.
The dial of the Extra Platscription has a fillet edging on the base and chapter ring. These go back even further, with machines that date back to around 1850. The Roman numerals, Daniel Roth logo, and watch serial number are also all printed in deep blue. This blue hue matches perfectly with the heat blue hour and minute hands.
on your wrist
Surprisingly, the Extra Plat Suscription fits my 18.5 cm wrist very snugly, despite being only 33.5 mm wide and 38.6 mm long. Yes, even with such modest dimensions it works very well even on larger wrists. The double oval 18K yellow gold case is very elegant and perfect for a dress watch.
Caliber DR002
Like the Tourbillon Suscription, the caseback of this new model is entirely gold. The hand-wound DR002 movement remains a secret to the wearer, just like the original caliber from the ’90s. However, while similar to the DR001 tourbillon movement, the DR002 is built from scratch. This caliber is only 3.1 mm thick (or thinner) and has the same shape as the double oval case. It also meets all traditional watchmaking standards with regard to its construction and applied decoration. For example, the bridges have rounded and polished bevels. Master watchmakers have also paid close attention to the feel of this movement, ensuring a satisfying winding experience. The balance is free-sprung with four arms, each with an adjustable inertia weight.
Daniel Roth will only produce 20 pieces of this Extra Plat Sauce. The first watches will be delivered this month. Of course, another Daniel Roth Extra Plat will be released as a non-limited edition.
I know 2025 has only just begun, but I’d be surprised if this homage to the original Daniel Roth Extra Plat wasn’t on my list of favorite watches of the year 11 months from now. Sho. What an incredible joy to wear and admire.
Daniel Roth Extra Plat Subscription retails for CHF 45,000 (excluding tax). Click here for more information.
