You can qualify for sleepy towns with only 929 residents. Villett, located in the Swiss Canton in Bern, is truly quiet. It is stuck between the two mountain ridges of Jura, and aside from the pizzeria, which for some reason serves Dutch beer instead of Switzerland, the isolated place is almost timeless. Still, time plays a very important role in Villeret. And for those who appreciate time capture on mechanical watches, Villett is a place of great excitement. That’s because I have a Rue Principale 36 and Minerva has an Atelier. In modest manufacturing, watchmaking magic occurs, such as hairspring production and monopusher rat trapante chronograph. This is also where specialist artisans create the cylindrical tourbillon sphere of Mont Blanc 1858, in a limited edition of 80 days.
The watch brand Minerva began in 1858 and to commemorate this, Mont Blanc, a integral part of Minerva, uses this year as the name of its collection. An exceptional clock trilogy has been created to showcase all the aspects of Haute Horlogerie that he learned at Minerva. Fratello traveled to Villeretto and in 80 days saw and experienced the Haute-Horloggery watch trilogy inspired by Jules Verne’s novel. The final chapter of the clock trilogy depicts the final leg of the legendary adventures of Phyllis Fogg and his faithful French Barrett Jean Paspertout.
80 Day Limited Edition – Chapter 3: Cylindrical Tour of Mont Blanc 1858 Worldwide Experience of Billon Earth Sphere
Let’s assume you know the story about Phileas Fogg. He is a man who boasted at the London Reform Club and believes he can orbit the Earth in 80 days to give it a try. His competition against time was the subject of the Mont Blanc Watch trilogy, made possible by all intricate experts, from athletic structures at Minerva to finishing, decoration, and various Metier art.
In a limited edition of 80 days, the cylindrical Tourbillon Geos Fair of Mont Blanc 1858 from around the world depicts lace with the watch in a 47 x 16.6mm rose gold case topped with a laser-engraved rose gold bezel. For your information, two previous watches came in white gold and their own lime gold. The generous case is the frame, and the dial is a canvas showing Phyllis Fogg’s final leg and the scene of the Jumpas Part Out journey from Yokohama to London, passing through San Francisco and New York. Starting from the left of the tourbillon, you “read” the adventure. The tourbillon is another and worthy of complete attention, so you should not rush ahead.
The mystery of hairspring
Montblanc’s cylindrical tour billon is a true piece of clock art and finesse. Tourbillon, for example, has a double-curved, three-dimensional bridge with a convex shape that harmonizes with the twin gloves on the dial, which we will explain later. Underneath it, the large cage completes its rotation every 60 seconds. Each bridge requires over 7 days of handcrafting and polishing by a master watch maker. The result is a perfect finish that emphasizes technical and artistic shine. Incidentally, the final watch is the product of a single watchmaker who creates from start to finish. And the assembly occurs twice to ensure that everything is technically and aesthetically perfect.
The cylindrical hairspring is an attractive feature of the tourbillon. Unlike flat, traditional hairsprings, cylindrical hairsprings are exceptional. They are considered the pinnacle of accuracy and have been reserved for the best ocean chronometers in the past. Such chronometers are essential for navigation, allowing seafarers to determine longitude with unparalleled accuracy during long voyages. The Minerva facility creates this type of balance spring, forming elastic metal wires to strength with perfectly equal coils, stacked vertically rather than aligned. This structure eliminates mild eccentricity of the centroid, a defect inherent in flat springs, and ensures the highest possible chronometric performance.
Respected and admired in the present, the cylindrical hairspring remains a symbol of the premium auto hollogary. We looked at the equipment used, explained the difficulties and saw the watchmakers working, but the process was so exclusive and unique that we were not allowed to take photos.
Bridging tourbillon
I’ll hug your horse. This watch has more to say about the tourbillon, so we’re not ready to leave yet. The hand-wrapped caliber MB M68.40 features an eye-catching 91-part tourbillon mechanism with a double curved, three-dimensional infinite loop of the bridge. According to the watchmakers who explained to us the inside and outside of the watch, convex shapes are not only difficult to produce, but also painful to end up at the highest standards. A watchmaker is required for seven days to handcraft the distinctive tourbillon bridge and give it the perfect refined finish.
We’re digging deep into the movement, so we’ll just have to hurry and wait to board the train towards the Humboldt Mountains of the Nevada and further east to board the train, as the central Atlantic Ocean will no longer be there anyway. Take a few more moments to praise the 281 hand-miund movements in the watch. The 3Hz caliber shows blue steel hours and minutes of hands, inspired by 19th century pocket watches, with blue steel hours and minutes of hands. Furthermore, we cannot overlook two Earths, the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. This shows 24 time zones with day/night passing.
Ready to finish your voyage?
It’s now time to finish the world tour and dial. Start at the top left of the dial. This shows the hero arrives in San Francisco by boat. After they leave, the train they cross the US is blocked by a herd of bison. The New York steamship, which then runs out of fuel, travels across the Atlantic and takes the story’s heroes. So, at 6am, Phyllis Fogg is seen, with a briefcase and a card in hand. To his left is a pass-part out, clutching the coin and his gas bill. Remember when he forgot to turn off the burner before he left London? To his right is Mrs. Auda, dressing the bride and holding both a wedding ring and a pomegranate flower, a flower in the shade of her lips.
Behind this is a 19th century world map highlighting London’s Paul Mall. The 3 o’clock pocket watch shows 20:44, with Fogg a timely arrival at the Reform Club marking the victory conclusion of his epic journey around the world.
The dial is brass and mother’s mother, and requires nearly a month of work. The top section shows the mother-of-pearl applique. Made from German silver, the bottom is finished with laser texture, hand-carved and delicate miniature paintings.
Luxury trip
Introducing the cylindrical tour Billon Earthsphere of Mont Blanc 1858 worldwide in a limited edition of 80 days – Chapter 3 (Reference 134294 / Prices on request). However, some details are worth noting, such as two fixed miniature gloves depicting the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. They show intricately engraved and hand-drawn continents, oceans, and meridians. Around them, a 24-hour World Time Disc with day/night indicator circles – one rotates clockwise and one counter-clockwise. It will allow the wearer to track sunlight and time around the world. And speaking of the wearer, only three people have the opportunity to use this watch as an actual travel watch. This is because there are only three examples.
When those people travel, they can adjust the indicator via the 3 o’clock crown and the 8 o’clock pusher. After pulling out the crown, they set local time while synchronizing the world time display of two 24-hour gloves. Once you’ve lined up, it’s easy to switch to a new time zone. Simply press the pusher at 8 o’clock and proceed for an hour of hand in an hour’s steps without disturbing a few minutes.
Mont Blanc 1858 Final Words 80 Days Limited Edition – Chapter 3
Apart from the charming Tourbillon, one of the most stunning details appears on the left side of the dial. There, all the non-essential wooden pieces of the steamship Henrietta are chopped up to fuel the vessel. This is a lovely and humorous touch of a very complicated clock that shows that Montblanc can play at the highest level of Haute Holloggery through Villette’s Minerva Atelier. This clock told us that only 929 towns could become hotspots. Probably to play the watch, not the craft beer of a craftsman.
