Russell Sheldrake Design Forward Indie Brand Pauline introduces her first diving watch, Mara. The name linked to the brand’s Scottish roots comes from the Scottish Gaelic word for “sea.” It combines Pauline’s creativity with true dive watch specs such as 300m water resistance and a unidirectional bezel.
Friends of Paulin, an independent Scottish brand, have released their first attempt at divers with Mala. To mark this as a genuine Scots, the brand chose the Scottish Gaelic term “of the sea.” This is the first brand of the brand to consult with the arena’s number one expert, so Jason Heaton, who describes the New York era as a “test pilot,” consulted with this Aleem’s number one. So let’s take a look at this debut Diver from a brand known for its design surrounding the Tool Watch feature.
There are many important dive watch features here, but it’s still undoubtedly Pauline and it’s great to see a brand with such a strong visual identity maintain it as it explores new realms. The Mara takes over the shape of the case seen from Pauline’s modular line, and its round lug gives it the look of the classic turtleshell design (as it became famous in many Seiko Dive watches). The case is 39.7mm with a considerable thickness of 13.5mm, but the conservative 48mm lagtoo lug fits most wrist sizes.
This is a dome-shaped sapphire bezel with a rather minimalist scale printed on Pauline’s own Wim typeface, rolling into a double-dome sapphire crystal that equally covers the minimalist dial. You will find a series of whimsical repeating squares, circles and triangles made from all the groomed Super Luminova, rather than the standard dot or baton markers you expect to find on a diving dial.
Of course, if they are talking to Mr. Heaton, the watch can take up serious tensions, and its 300m water resistance rating is proof of that. First, we have a need for custom injection molded rubber straps, diving watches, and then for Anorden’s in-house tailoring, a rather special fabric strap lined with faux suede. Both of these straps are available in blue or black.
Pauline is probably commonly associated with quartz movement, but Mara is carrying the LaJox Pellet G101. Ultimately, this watch brings the best of Paulin to the world of dive watches in a way that doesn’t violate any of the key principles of standard diving watches. Pauline makes use of creativity in a way that makes this watch extremely readable, functional, and aesthetically pleasing everything at once.
