For race fans, the new Formula 1 movie should be a summer movie event. It promises heart-warming actions, along with the opportunity to see stars like Brad Pitt and Damson Idris in the driver’s seat of a modern Formula One car. But what is a race car without a high-performance watch? Enter IWC Schaffhausen as the official watch sponsor for Pitt’s and Idris’ fictional race teams, the APX GP. However, that’s not the only thing, as the film has influenced the new collection of watches it explores.
Honestly, there aren’t enough race movies to satisfy us who enjoy high-speed vehicle competition. It will be changed on June 25th, when the length of the film F1 was released. The film is produced by Jerry Brookheimer, Lewis Hamilton, Brad Pitt and their partners. It forms a blockbuster already made, but also rides Joseph Kosinski, director of Top Gun, director of Maverick. The cast is strong and includes Brad Pitt, Damson Idris, Kelly Condon, Javier Bardem and Tobias Menzies. When it comes to trying to get a glimpse into a very important wrist wear, expect to find the IWC in a prominent position.
F1, movies
Before digging into the latest IWC clock, set the stage with a brief plot summary for F1 (no spoilers here!). The story follows Sony Hayes, the character of Pitt, a former Formula One driver who was injured in a crash in the 90s. While working as a taxi driver, he is contacted by his old friend and current team owner, Reuben Cervantes. Cervantes convinces Hayes to return to his team, APX GP, as a teammate and mentor for Joshua Pierce, played by Damson Idris. Kelly Condon will play Kate McKenna, the team’s technical director. Tobias Menzies is cast as Peter Banning, an APX board member who is driving the sale of the team. Another great detail is that it includes the current Star, Randnoris, Max Barstappen, Lewis Hamilton and more.
IWC clock
Throughout the film, careful eyes will notice a lot of IWC watches. In fact, many of the watches in the pilot collection are found on the wrists of various characters. However, there are also some new releases celebrating the APX GP team, using Black and Gold as their primary color. As you can see, the three are chronographs, and watch styles that are suitable for drivers. The main character’s clock influenced the fourth clock.
Ingenieur automatic 40 with green dial
Last July, at the Hungarian Grand Prix, Brad Pitt was discovered in the vintage 70s IWC Ingenieur SL Ref. 1832 with custom green dial. Pick this up quickly and see it assumes a link to filming an F1 movie. IWC confirmed that the watch includes a custom dial by Cloister Watch Company, a NYC-based company specializing in custom vintage watches. If the idea of changing one of these rare gems sounds scary, IWC has a more modern solution.
The latest limited edition Ingenieur Automatic 40 is now available on PVD-coated green soft iron dial. Reference IW328908 is limited to 1,000 numbered pieces and includes a grid pattern dial with gold-plated indexes and hands. The watch is similar to the work Hayes wears in the film.
In terms of specs, the watch is the same as the regular stainless steel Ingenieur Automatic 40 model. This means a case of 40mm x 45.7mm with just 10.7mm thick. Inside, the watch uses an automatic caliber 32111 with a 120-hour power reserve. As a sports watch, it is ready to handle most activities with a 10 bar water resistance rating. The price for this limited edition is 14,200 euros, an increase of 1,300 euros over the unlimited reference.
IWC Pilot Chronograph 41 APXGP, Red Gold
Formula One has always been a blend of performance and glamour, with the new IWC pilot watch chronograph 41 APXGP following the suit. To celebrate F1, this 41mm x 14.7mm watch uses an 18K 5N red gold case and a black rubber strap. Reference IW388309 has a black lacquer dial with gold indexes and hands filled with applied Super Luminova. The IWC is known for its 6-9-12 chronograph layout, which features a total of 30 minutes, a mileage second, a 12-hour counter and a total of 30 minutes. There is also a date and date display.
The sapphire display back shows the in-house automatic caliber 69385. This is a neatly decorated movement with a 46-hour power reserve and is adjusted in five positions. Again, this watch is intended for use and has a water resistance rating of 10 bars. The price reflects the exclusive nature of gold at 28,600 euros. Note this work on the wrist of Damson Idris character Joshua Pierce.

Stainless Steel Pilot Watch Chronograph APXGP in 41mm and 43mm Cases
For those who enjoy more elemental chronographs, IWC has created a special version of the stainless steel pilot watch chronograph for F1. It is available in a 41mm case as the reference IW388116 and in a 43mm size as the IW378009. The watch includes gold details such as the outer Minute Track, Sub-Dial Track, and Hand to celebrate the APX GP team. Each watch comes with a black rubber strap and a stainless steel pin buckle. IWC’s Easx-change makes changing the strap easier when you switch to leather or another material.
A notable difference from the gold version is that the Display Case back includes the APX GP team logos of Sonny Hayes and Joshua Pearce. Again, the company’s automatic 69385 runs the clock. These watches are the most affordable way to get memento from the movie, with prices of 7,700 euros for 41mm and 7,800 euros for the 43mm version.
Pilot Watch Performance Chronograph Persistent Calendar Digital Date
The perpetual calendar is a serious watch, perhaps the kind of piece worn by the team principal. To support F1, IWC is making the debut of Modern Pilot’s Watch Performance Chronograph Perpetual Calendar Digital Date-Month. Reference IW388801 is 43mm and is made from the brand’s black ceratanium alloy. It combines the lightweight properties of titanium with the scratch resistance of ceramics. The matching Ceratanium bracelet is attached to the watch and is equipped with a simple push button system for adding or removing links.
This is a loaded perpetual calendar! In addition to the date, date, month and year, there is a full flyback chronograph. The display contains small seconds and total agent. Additionally, there is a water resistance rating of 10 bars. The 89802 automatic movement on display both inside and outside is the Manufacturing 89802. This powertrain has 474 pieces, boasting a 68-hour power reserve and frequency is 28,800VPH. The watch is a technical tour similar to an F1 car! For 89,600 euros, it is an exclusive and high-performance piece.
Big Pilot Watch Shock Absorber Tour Bellon Skeleton XPL
The final watch inspired by the racing colours of the APX GP is the Big Pilot Watch Shock Absorber Tour Bellon Skeleton XPL. In 2021, IWC released its first Big Pilot watch shock absorber XPL. This is a watch that can withstand 30,000 g of power! Currently, the brand is raising its stock by adding 82915 automatic toolbillon to the mix. The proprietary SPRIN-G Protect System ensures that movement continues despite shocks of up to 10,000 g.
IWC has chosen the Ceratanium for this 44mm watch. It is also only 13mm thick and is water resistant to 10 bar. It only comes with a black elastic strap. You can expect an 80-hour power reserve from Tourbillon and see it through the front or back of the case. Of these pieces, 100 are available, and prices are available in the application.
How do you celebrate F1 films?
The IWC all went outside to celebrate F1. The brand name appears on the wrists of APX GP cars, garages, gloves and various cast members, but is not felt above. When it comes to watches, I love the suppression and lack of dial decorations. As for color combinations, black and gold have a history of Formula One, so I feel the colour is correct. Again, there is no passey or kitsch. The question is, apart from watching the movie, do you look forward to seeing these watches on screen and at your local IWC boutique?
