I have to confess that I am not a big gamer, so before I put the limited edition of Hamilton Boulton Death Stranding 2 on my wrist, I had to hone my knowledge of death tricks to create a little more context. The watch was created to celebrate the release of a sequel to the hit game. Very realistic games often feature real actors and use voices, making them just a small step out of the world of cinema that Hamilton named. For this new release, Hamilton worked with the game’s art director Yojijinkawa to create a watch that perfectly complements the environment of death after death. How do you hold up in real life? It’s time to investigate.
After doing some research into death tricks, I became familiar with the game. After all, some of my friends performed it religiously. I’ve learned that this game isn’t too far from the film industry. As you probably know, Hamilton has become a “filmmaker watchmaker” over the past 90 years. For the director of Death, Kojima Hideo and Kojima Productions joined well-known actors such as Lee Sadux, Mads Mikkelsen and Norman Reudus, who play lead character Sam Porter Bridge, to create in-game characters. As a result, it’s pretty close to home for Hamilton.
Details of Hamilton Boulton Death Stranding 2 Limited Edition
But we’re here to talk about the watch. Mike has already written an introduction, so he will quickly discuss the basics so he can focus on the wearing experience. Mike explained that the two limited editions of Death are part of Hamilton’s Boulton Line. This is a series of watches from the brand’s Classic series that follows the famous Cartier Tank.
Hamilton introduced Boulton in 1941, so it’s a proper classic. In today’s collection, the brand offers watches with case sizes of 27mm x 32mm. Death Stranding 2 Limited Edition gives you a totally different experience. The shape is the only one that resembles a regular Boulton.
The new limited edition is a black PVD treated titanium watch in the shape of a Tonno. The case is 36mm wide, 48mm long, and 13.7mm thick. You know, even if it’s badly black, it’s a very big watch.
The 26mm wide three-row titanium bracelet with sandblast finish, black PVD coating and butterfly clasp emphasizes its presence. Additionally, the bracelet does not taperely to a more elegant width with a clasp. As a result, the watch almost feels like a futuristic bracelet. However, this case reminds us that this is more than just a watch.
Amazing Case of Boulton Death Stranding 2 Limited Edition
Firstly, this case may be traditional in its basic form, but it is far from that in its implementation. At the curved top of the case is seven crystals. The first is a traditional curved straight sapphire crystal with an anti-enhancing coating that governs the front view.
Each of them has a lattice holding three sapphire crystals. The result is a unique side view of the dial and hand. The case construction gives the watch a more or less arena-like presence, which I like as a design object.
Hamilton combined a layered black dial with a case with multiple finishes. The outer section has a media blast finish and features applied time markers. One index, 12 index, is a lacquer-shaped orange color that matches the large orange second hand. Other markers feature a brushed finish with a polished chamfer for visual glow.
Working inwards the dial is stepped twice, and the middle ring is added with an additional print time marker. The center has the Hamilton name, logo and “automatic” grey.
Finally, the orange second hand has an oval oval, skeletonized, time and minute hands with brushes. As a result, this watch looks futuristic, but also looks like a watch that could have been designed in the 1970s.
Automatic Hamilton Caliber H-10
The watch is futuristic, but its movements are familiar. Inside, there is an automatic Hamilton caliber H-10, essentially the ETA C07.611 (PowerMatic 80), based on the familiar ETA 2824. The operating frequency has been reduced to 21,600VPH and the power reserve has been improved to 80 hours. Additionally, Nivachron balance springs help resist the effects of magnetic fields and temperature changes.
Finally, the caliber is visible thanks to the rectangular sapphire crystal, which features tar-like decorations in the game. The black frame on the caseback features a unique limited edition number for each watch, along with several other details such as water resistance and reference numbers.
Wearing a limited edition of Hamilton Boulton Death Stranding 2
When I placed the watch on my wrist, the first thing that stood out was its size. Even on such a small 18.5cm wrist, it has a lot of presence. I wanted to see a slightly smaller version as I made the watch a little more elegant. Now I know that elegance isn’t necessarily what Hamilton was chasing. The context is not my preference, but Death Director 2. However, with a slightly smaller case and a particularly slim bracelet, the watch would have been easier to wear and visually digested.
First of all, the case is 48mm long, which is already important. However, due to the bracelet’s construction, the initial link is tilted at a slight angle rather than descending vertically. As a result, the bracelet doesn’t immediately wrap around your wrist.
A small gap increases the length by a few millimeters. Secondly, the bracelet has a width of 26mm, but the gap between the lugs is only 20mm. This is due to the extended structure of the end links, and aligns with the outside of the lug. Only when the bracelet is removed can you see the original structure created by the brand. Unfortunately, while clever, it does not make wearing the watch easier.
Final Thoughts on Hamilton Boulton Death Stranding 2 Limited Edition
Again, this isn’t necessarily a crowd watch of hardcore watches. A little context makes us realize that this futuristic tool is part of a dystopian death environment. It is a design wizardry display placed in the world of video games, and from that point of view I am grateful for the watch as a design object. The shape and structure of the case is unique and attractive. The side view did not disappoint me during the week we had a watch in the office.
Plus, this watch would like to check out when a new video game is announced. That’s about the best compliments I can give to Hamilton. For fans, this new 2,000-piece limited edition could be a great manifestation of the wrist game.
So I think it’s a clever release by Hamilton. All 2,000 pieces will be on sale for 1,625 euros in June 2025. Certainly, it’s not a pocket change, but when you look at the watch, hold it and wear it, you’ll understand it better. The design and engineering that led to the creation of the Boulton Death Stranding 2 limited edition is impressive and certainly an influential watch.
