If you’ve never heard of a brand of Celten, you’re not alone. However, the brand founded by Leonardo Tsai has been around since 2017. The founder of Hong Kong-based Selten grew up around the clock as he comes from a family of dial makers. After his first mission in the world of finance, Tsai gave up his job at JP Morgan and continued his family legacy. Under his Selten brand, he released his first M1 Moonface, a classic series of watches featuring beautiful stone dials. The follow-up was a diver’s bronze salvage series with hand-drawn dials. For the brand new Selten Grand Feu Enamel series, Tsai combines the classic silhouette of the M1 Moon Phase with a series of colorful Grand Who enamel dials. Let’s find out more.
As a German speaker, the first thing that stood out about Selten was the brand name, as it translates to “rare” or “rare.” Choosing a name for a Hong Kong-based brand is not the most obvious choice. This comes from the fascination with German watchmaking by Leonardo Zei, the founder of Selten. It serves as an inspiration for the young founder who came from the dial maker’s family. That family tradition plays a major role in providing Selten. Using the M1 MoonHase, especially the Salvage Bronze, Tsai showed the visual appeal of the special dial. The new Grand Feweyenamel series does the same, and I had the opportunity to practice the bluish-gray variant named Moonstone.
The story of the Selten Grand Feu Enamel series
Ever since Tsai started Selten in 2017, he has always wanted to release watches with the Grand Feu Enamel dial. These special dials represent a great tradition of making all glory. For this series of watches, Tsai collaborated with Qin, a self-taught enamelist, jeweller and sculptor with 10 years of experience working in a jewellery house in China. The two men first contacted in 2021 and began working on creating standout dials for the new series of watches.
In 2023, the man showed off his first Grand Fewey Enamel prototype dial during a spring spring fair in Singapore. The dial was met with many praises. The combination of bright colors and incredible craftsmanship proved to be a hit for watch fans. Two years later, Selten finally brought them to the market. The new Selten Grand Feu Enamel series shows five different dial colors run in two different patterns. The first is five dials with a flare pattern, while the second quintet has a spiral pattern.
Details of Celten Grand Fewenamel Moonstone
The watch we had in the office for review was the Celten Grand Feu Enamel Moonstone with a bluish-gray dial with a spiral pattern. Let’s look at the details to see more details. The canvas for the dial is a watch taken after the brand’s M1 MoonPhase series.
Each watch comes with a 39mm stainless steel case with a thickness of 10.9mm, length of 45.5mm, and 20mm lug spacing. Traditionally formed cases are water resistant up to 50 meters and feature a mix of brushes and polished surfaces that give your watch a lovely visual presence. The topping for the case is a dome-shaped sapphire crystal with 7 layers of inner AR coating.
Within the case, Selten uses a Soprod M100 caliber. This 25 Jewel Swiss automatic movement runs at 28,800 VPH and offers a 42-hour power reserve. This movement is adjusted to five positions with an accuracy of ±6 seconds per day.
The watch we received features a hand-extension rotor. This is an option that can be ordered individually for an additional $100 USD. As most of you know, Soplod is part of the Festina and offers movement to quite a few small brands, such as Celica, Oak & Oscar and Lorie.
Finally, the watch appears on a leather strap that matches the dial very well. I received a press sample with an optional stainless steel bracelet that converts the presence of the watch very dramatically. I really like the leather strap appearance as it maintains the appeal of the watch better.
Everything about Grand Who Enamel Dial
But these watches are of course about dials. The spiral pattern version of the dial is the most labor-intensive. As for style, I’ll choose a version of the flare pattern because it’s a little easier.
However, looking at the spiral version, you can quickly see that a lot of work has been done to create these dials. First, there is a distinctive pattern on the silver base. Every dial has around 700 hand-extension lines, and it takes about 5 hours to create a pattern alone. And looking at the swirl and its consistency, it’s easy to understand how difficult this is and why only a real craftsman can pull it apart.
After receiving the engraved pattern, the dial will be enameled in one of five colors. The first one has a purple (prism violet), the second one has a red (rustique), the third one has a yellow (golden fall), the fourth is a blue (Sunbird Blue), and finally, a blueish (Moonstone) dial for reviews. All dials feature fine silver railway tracks and time markers.
At 3, 6, 9, and 12 o’clock, elongated Roman numerals are found to add style. Additionally, the phone consists of a short time hand with an open ring and triangular tip, a long, simple hand, and a blue second hand in the same style as the moment hand.
She wears a Celten Grand Fewenamel moonstone
The Moonstone Dial is the brightest and brightest of the five dials. Choose the dark blue, yellow or purple options to add more color to that wonderful pattern. Yes, the bluish-gray moonstone variant is the least outspoken and could be a great everyday wearer. But if I had such a special handmade dial, I would like it to stand out. Your preferences may vary.
I often wear Celten Grand Feuuenamel moonstone on my wrist. Its shape and style may look a bit traditional, but the stainless steel bracelet keeps it quite modern. The H-Link bracelet changes the presence of a watch very dramatically. This bracelet has a spring-loaded butterfly clasp with a Tools fine-tuning system. You can pull out the final links on both ends of the clasp. Selten offers this option for an additional $150 USD. Another option is the same bracelet with no tweaks. This is 80 USD.
It’s a great match so I choose the standard strap. Plus, it’s nice to switch things up with other colorful straps for different situations. The variations in the dial combine well with leather straps in a variety of colors. I usually prefer bracelets, so that’s an interesting conclusion for me. However, in this series, the leather straps are part of the colorful overall presence. That being said, the bracelet is tape neatly from 20mm on the case to 16mm on the clasp. This is an elegant H-Link bracelet.
On the wrist
Once on the wrist, a considerable number of details stand out. The first is a detailed dial. Of course. In addition to the pattern, enamel gives the dial a nice sparkling feel. Then hovering over it, with long moments and seconds hand bends towards the tip. The hand of Time is characterized by a large circle towards the tip floating above the Selten word mark. Unlike Tusenö Shellbackv2, I reviewed it a while ago, but Wordmark is not bent to display perfectly through this circle. However, the circles hollowed out towards the hints are fantastic details.
Final Thoughts on the Selten Grand Feu Enamel Series
Thanks to the onion-style push/pull crown, you can easily set and adjust the time. Whenever you do it, you will be reminded of its wonderfully crafted dial. Of course, it’s the main story of this new series of five watches. It’s great to see Selten take another step to impress watch fans after the first M1 moon phase and salvage bronze. These dials are special that you don’t often see from microbrands. We will also look at these new models.
Because these handmade dials are works of art The price of the watch is higher than that of previously released models. The first 100 pieces of Selten Grand Feu enamel are reserved for USD 1,899 on a flare dial and USD 2,199 with a spiral dial. Delivery will begin in June 2025. As mentioned before, a customized rotor or stainless steel bracelet adds premium That price. Once the first 100 pieces are sold out, the regular price will be $2,599 for the Flare Dial Variant and $2,899 for the Spiral Pattern version. We are very grateful for these new Celten Grand Fewenamel models. The result will definitely adorn the wrists of watch fans soon.
