The Tom Austin the Square Van Tourbillon 4-Day Power Reserve further boosts Hibro’s internal capabilities with movements specifically designed for the square case. The watch comes with the first list. This is the first square bang with only two central hands, first a 3D carbon fiber case and first a Tourbillon Caliber. This new release expands the Square Bang collection and brings a strong attention to Hublot’s frequently overlooked manufacturing and design skills.
You’ve probably heard the phrase “round pegs in a square hole.” When it comes to square watches, that’s exactly what happens. Most clocks are circular in nature, and when you force them into a square or rectangular case, they rarely fit perfectly technically or visually. Watch movement is a complex machine, and getting it to work in an unconventional way can be a challenging task, but if someone is going to work on it, there’s one brand out there with good shots. Hublot has released its latest work, and at a glance it won’t attack you as something different from before, but under the skin, it took the concept of Square Bang, and this time evolved in a time-only composition.
Hublot’s Square Bang always houses an automatic Unico 2 chronograph movement. This is the caliber that is usually found on round watches from some brands. That’s not to say that the movement looked strange with square bangs, but it’s clear that Hublot isn’t happy with it either. Next, enter the Hublot Square Bang Tourbillon 4-Day Power Reserve. A specially developed time-only square bang with manual scratches motion that enhances the clock’s square geometry.
There are many changes to this watch, some are more subtle, while others are a little more impressive. The 42 mm square case is made from 3D carbon fiber. This is a material that is not yet seen in Square Bangs. It’s interesting that Hublot broadens its horizons with this model, as Square Bang is usually reserved for titanium, gold and ceramics. The weaving of carbon fibers is laid in a way that gives the perception of three-dimensional materials, each layer providing more and more depth. It looks pretty cool and is a great start from the regular twill weave and forged varieties.
The case proportion remains similar to the other models, with the thickness increasing to just 13.2mm, perhaps to promote tour billon. It never becomes a cute watch, but it should not. It’s hublot and there are actually a lot of other watches that are much bigger and heavier than this.
Of course, this new model is no longer a chronograph, which means it lacks the pusher on the side of the case. Inside, there is a new MHUB602 caliber, a manual scratch, time-only movement, specially developed for this watch. It’s another first for Square Bang, and what I say brings about something refined. The simplicity of the time-only caliber contrasts well with busy, technical aesthetics, but in typical Hublot fashion it goes all-out and throws the tourbillon escape on the right scale.
The Tourbillon was previously missing from the square van range, but considering that this is now a Time-only work, it makes sense to add it, even if it’s just for the excitement of a pseudo-combination. As mentioned before, such movements are a variation of other variations often used in completely different watches, but the MHUB602 is developed with square geometry in mind.
Sitting under a sapphire seat, each black-plated skeletonized bridge is modeled in a square configuration, with the main components being distributed on four sides of the square. A winding on the right side, a power reserve on the left side, a large barrel on the top, and a tourbillon. Visually, this creates a balance that we have never seen before. The artistry with the bridge looks fantastic, almost reminiscent of Mondrian, a Dutch painter known for his horizontal and vertical lines.
As the name suggests, the move is powerful and boasts a minimum of 96 hours of power reserve thanks to the huge 12 o’clock barrel. The power reserve is displayed by a large indicator on the left side of the dial.
The finishing touches the watch is a typical textured integrated rubber strap with a black ceramic and titanium unfolding buckle. These are actually compatible and are always the case with Square Bangs, but the stealth black look is great and matches well with the case texture.
