It’s great to frequently review truly affordable watches like the Sternglas Hamburg Automatik. After all, entry-level mechanical watches are perfect for daily wear and can provide a start to new collectors. Sternglas does these watches well, adding thoughtful details, including an attractive dial in unusual room colours. Today we’ll be looking at the latest addition to the lineup, the Hamburg Automatic Edition Marine.
With the introduction of the Marine Corps, Sternglas is currently offering five versions of Hamburg Automatik. In fact, it is a popular model due to its color options and attractive pricing. The brand also makes ordering easier and offers a wide range of straps and bracelet options. Find out the latest additions to your lineup.
Sternglas Hamburg Automatik Edition Marine
For those familiar with Hamburg automatics, the specs are no surprises. It has a watch diameter of 42mm, a lug-to-lug 45mm, and an overall profile (medium case with a thickness of 6mm). However, a major change is the polished gold PVD coating in a 316L stainless steel case. Until now, Sternglas only offered this model in polished steel and bronze PVDs. Even with dressy outfits, the depth of the watch is rated 50 meters.
Blue dial worthy of the image of the navy
Marines have matte dark blue dials with contrasting details. Sternglas chose the blue and gold combination, as it resembles the historic uniforms of naval officers. The sleek gold tone hands and frames of the date window all match the case. White minute/hour tracks ensure optimal readability for dark dials. Another fun addition is applying Orange Super Luminova to the three central hands and pips of 3, 6, 9, and 12. It complements the gold case without a precise match.
Bright applications are not heavy, but provide sufficient coverage to be effective in low light situations. I don’t think the wearer will hello the frigate at night, but in view, the Hamburg Automatic Edition Marine is left to the job! Otherwise, the dial layout is clean and follows a Bauhaus-inspired form established in the original silver model.
Carved case back
The latest Hamburg Automatik leaps further on the Marine Corps theme with an engraved caseback. The historic Windjummer ship recalls a merchant ship sailed from Hamburg in the past few centuries. It’s a great detail, especially for affordable watches. Additionally, the case is returned to its original position and houses four screws that ensure water resistance.
Automatic Miyota 8215
True to that moniker, the Hamburg Automatic has an automatic movement. The Miyota 8215 is located inside and has a frequency of 21,600Vph with a 42-hour power reserve. Additionally, it offers date features for hacking seconds, manual windings and quick sets. With its officially listed accuracy of -20/+40 seconds per day, although not a master chronometer, the Sternglas can provide high quality and reliable mechanical movement at a reasonable price. Furthermore, my experience with the 8215 is that it is usually performed more accurately than the specifications suggest.
I’m wearing a marine
The Hamburg Automatik Edition Marine cuts a handsome figure on the wrist, especially when paired with a dark brown heritage strap (where Sternglas speaks for a crocodile pattern leather strap) and a pin buckle. It’s dressy, but it doesn’t look quiet, it looks expensive. Addresses the elephants in the room with respect to diameter 42mm. The slim bezel makes the watch look bigger, but the 45mm lug-to-lug distance makes it a lot of wear.
Sternglas also offers easy changes to the watch and four other pairing options. Brown suede (my favorite), gold-plated Milanese mesh, slim gold-plated bracelet and black crocodile patterned leather are optional at no additional cost.
Pricing and availability
The Hamburg Automatik Edition Marine is perfect for your Sternglas catalogue. It offers more formal options while taking advantage of current trends in gold watches. But it still has a fresh, modern look design with its ageless Bauhaus styling and orange super luminova. It’s available on the brand’s website at a reasonable price for 429 euros. Yes, there are other competitive options mainly from Japanese brands, but Sternglas brings European style to its design. It certainly resonates with some buyers.
