Last November, Awake changed courses when he debuted his new Sơn Mài collection. Previously, the brand often focused on space-themed watches. As the name suggests, the inspiration for these watches comes from Steven Spielberg’s 1993 blockbuster hit film Jurassic Park and is based on the book by Michael Criton. When the book and film came out, I was in high school and I devoured both! The effects were great, the dinosaurs were realistic, and quotes from the actors were memorable. Awake captured these elements in a non-campy way with two different watches.

The latest sơnmài clocks take clues from two of the most memorable prehistoric creatures in Jurassic Park. The orange model called the T-Rex reminds me of the dinosaur with the title that destroyed the main lobby at the theme park. The corresponding green version, The Raptors, takes inspiration from the wily velociraptors that threatened the characters throughout the film. Each piece uses a 39mm x 45.6mm recycled 316L stainless steel case with sapphire crystal on each side. The 50m water resistance rating will also be carried over from the original release.

Dial inspired by the dinosaur iris

Again, Vietnamese artisans are working to create a sơnmà imétiersd’Art dial, which includes a gold-plated base of silver leaves and subsequent lacquer in orange or green. The combination is then sanded to a smooth finish. Awake chose these colors to represent T-Rex and Raptors, as the same shade was used in the dinosaur iris film. The brand says they are meant to evoke fear, but they are still pretty beautiful.

The polished metal hands and indexes have not been changed and contain the underlying layer of solid Super Luminova BGW9. For Jurassic Watch models, the time marker design works perfectly due to its sharp, tooth-like shape! On the lower half of the dial, the silver applique represents something novel from each lizard’s claws. The orange model has an anatomically correct twin slash, with the green reference showing three marks from the sharp claws of the velociraptor.

ICTYOS Salmon Leather Skin

Straps usually don’t get much attention in introductory articles. However, the awakening dedication to sustainability led to an interesting selection of materials. The brand worked with French company Ictyos to create a dial matching strap with dinosaur-like scales and an iridescent surface finish.

Leather is actually salmon skin harvested from fish used in food. ICTYOS handles skins, increases strength and meets watchmaking requirements. The 20mm strap is handmade with tone-on-tone stitching, calfskin lining and a 16mm signed steel buckle.

Caseback with movie quotes

Awake has bolstered its decoration game with a caseback on the Jurassic Watch model. The inner ring has an engraved jungle motif. It also includes “Jurassic Watch” and “Swiss Made” in the same fonts as those found at the entrance to the movie poster and the theme park. There are also individual engraved numbers. Finally, each edition contains related quotes from the film. The T-Rex model depicts the “not spare the costs” of John Hammond, the character of Richard Attenborough, who created the park. Each Raptors model features “Life Finds a Way” from Dr. Ian Malcolm, drawn by Jeff Goldblum.

The Jurassic Watch uses an automatic La Joux-Perret G101 with a tungsten vibrating rotor. It has a frequency of 28,800Vph and a power reserve of 68 hours. Like the original sơnmài model, the movement is dateless, can be manually scratched and has a hacking feature.

Jurassic Watch Pricing and Availability

Perhaps due to the cult-like nature of this release, each Jurassic Watch model will see a limited run of just 50 numbered pieces. Also, the brand wants to ensure ongoing demand, as Awakening suggests that other films will have scope for future releases. Each model costs 2,075 euros, just 125 euros more than the original reference. It sounds fair considering the distinctive straps, additional sculptures and subtle nods to the film. Additionally, one lucky buyer receives a genuine Carcharodontosaurus teeth from around 100 million years ago. I saw him sitting next to a clock in Geneva. When it comes to T-Rex and Raptors, the watch looks great and integrates the spirit of this current classic film without feeling kitsch. You can imagine that there are colors to snap these right away with fans of the movie.
