Franck Muller is a brand founded in 1987 and has already had over 50 world premieres and patents. Whether it’s traditional high complications like perpetual calendars and tourbillons, or wild complications like crazy times or masterwriters, the brand has plenty of complex watch know-how. First launched in 2000, the Long Island Collection is the brand’s foray into Art Deco style rectangular watches, with its debut entry being a simple three-hander. Twenty-five years later, the evolution of Long Island saw dramatic modernization and uptake of complications. Introducing along with the 7-day Power Reserve Variant and the Giga Tourbillon model, the Franck Muller Long Island Evolution Master Jumper has the Laurel, which is said to be the first watch to have three jump displays.
Dial
From top to bottom, there are one disc for jump time, two discs for jump time, and two other discs for displaying the jump date. There is zero confusion as to where three green framed openings are fully laid out in the center of the dial and consider that all technical information is creatively printed on the sapphire crystal. Normally I would match camp with less text on the dial, but it’s similar to Bvlgari’s Octofinisimo sketch.
case
Made of black PVD treated titanium, the 30-meter water-resistant hand bud-like case is 35.3mm wide, 12.5mm thick, and 48.1mm lug-to-lug. Green accents are introduced into the mix via an aluminium bezel of anodized microblasts. The multilayered case is specially designed to better protect the movement of the shape from shocks, allowing curved sapphire crystals to be attached to the case flange without visible screws. Its curvature reduces the presence of a bit on the wrist, but even on a rectangular curved watch, the width of 48.1mm definitely overwhelms small size wrists.
strap
Matching the color scheme of the dial and case, Frank Muller paired it with a Long Island evolutionary master jumper with green stitching and black PVD treated titanium buckle and black crocodile leather strap. If this watch could be water resistant to over 50 meters, I would have preferred rubber straps to suit the modern energy of its technical aura, but at 30 meters, the leather straps are certainly the best pairing.
Movement
The master jumper has a movement that is shaped to suit the case. None of that round calibers are square case nonsense. The in-house FM 3100 is designed solely for this watch and is manually wound in a 30-hour power reserve. 30 hours, especially by modern standards, for exercise. In particular, it is something that is strictly designed. But this is ultimately a trade-off between calibers with three power reserve gaz rings and a jump display. For these to jump instantly, they needed two barrels to allow it.
“The biggest challenge for master jumpers is to power the numerical display,” explains Frank Muller. “To jump instantly with hours and a few minutes requires a considerable amount of energy, especially in time jumps, and more at the end of the day when the date jumps. To achieve sufficient torque towards the end of the power reserve, we came up with an innovative double barrel system with a first barrel located at 12 o’clock, with a second barrel located at 6 o’clock on two discs associated with the movement and date.”
The engineering of the movement is certainly worthy of praise and debate, but it is also worth noting that the calibers are finished in very fine detail, including the Côte de Genève, brain waves, chamfers and diamond polishing.
verdict
My 6.5 or very inch wrist feels this case is a bit intimidating, but I like the watches that wear it like vintage ones, and this is acquiesced, modern design. So, although I wouldn’t say that to me given the scale of the design, I enjoy its aesthetics and I highly respect the technological innovations of the watch with three jump displays. We also need to provide Frank Muller’s props for our commitment to creating a shaped, shaped movement, dedicated to dedicated and shaped movements in a world where the so-called “Holy Trinity” cannot be bothered.
Its clear feature means there are few true competitors, and there is only one competitor that is only FP Journe vagabondage. However, over three iterations, the FP Journe only had the largest of two digitally displayed signs, but displaying the seconds running through jump seconds takes the complications a step further. So there’s nothing else in this Master Jumper, so if you’re starting a world first premier and stand alone and independent watchmaking conversation, the Master Jumper is certainly something to consider.
