Two years ago, British watchmaker Fears and Garrick teamed up. Together they unveiled the aptly named Fears Garrick. Thanks to the horror, the watch looked charming and elegant, like a true gentleman. Garrick was there to impress us with the exposed balance wheel and overall finish of the watch. Now, they’re both back with a new version: Fears Garrick. This time, it uses a frosted salmon dial and is limited to 5 pieces.
They are available exclusively through independent watch retailer Collective Horology, the first American retailer for both Fears and Garrick. Let’s take a quick look at this very special version of Fears Garrick.
Fears Garrick Salmon of Collective Horology
Like the original, this limited edition Fears Gallic Salmon for Collective Horology comes with a curvaceous 42mm stainless steel case. Garrick makes this claim from his workshop in Norfolk, in the east of England. Carefully polished, elegantly tapered lugs securely hold the striking moss green leather strap. This strap is from The Strap Tailor and is an unusual combination with a frosted salmon dial, but it works well.
The layout and functions other than the color of the dial will not change. That’s not a bad thing at all, since it’s still fun to watch. At the end is a railway minute track with a small Fears hand-tipped logo appearing every five minutes. And then there are the diamond-polished numbers in the brand’s unique Edwin typeface. Black gold coating improves readability.
The distinctive skeletonized Fiers hand indicates both hours and minutes. At 10 o’clock, there is a recessed running seconds subdial framed by a bevelled rhodium edge. On the other side, there’s a gauge that shows the watch’s 45-hour power reserve, making “less is more.”
Garrick UTG04 movement
Next we arrive at the masterpiece of resistance: a large, handcrafted traditional balance bridge with a free-sprung balance wheel and balance spring at the back. It’s very fitting that this is a US limited edition, because like almost everything in the US, the balance assembly is bigger and better. This is usually called an open heart on the clock, but in this case it looks like the mouth is open. Perfectly complements the dial face.
Turning the watch over reveals the movement to which the balance is connected. Garrick’s hand-wound UTG04 features 19 jewels and a hand-brushed rhodium-plated finish. The finish can be described as quite minimalist and modern, while the polished bevels give it a finger-licking look. Garrick manufactures many of its components in its own workshops, where the brand’s watchmakers also assemble movements. Another great thing about this men’s watch is that it also has quite a sporty side to it. This watch is water resistant to 100 meters, making it perfect for everyday wear.
final thoughts
Collective Horology’s limited edition Fear’s Garrick Salmon is a stunning combination of elegance and technical prowess. The attractive design by Fears pairs very well with Garrick’s understated yet impressive level of finish. The collaborators only plan to make 5 pieces of this watch, but I think they’ll sell out quickly, especially since the US is such a big market.
Fear’s Garrick Salmon is available for pre-order now for $25,500 USD. Available exclusively through Collective Horology. If you wish, please visit the retailer’s website. Each sample is built to order.
