Apart from creating intricate wonders, Glashütte Original also has a vintage collection that takes inspiration from previous models. 60s references have consistently been some of my favorites since their launch in 2015. During this long production period, the German watchmaker has produced several limited series models with gorgeous dials. The Sixties Chronograph Annual Edition we’re reviewing today is from late 2023, but it’s so beautiful that it’s worth revisiting.
In fact, the Sixties Chronograph Annual Edition with a gray and black dial debuted in September 2023. However, some models are still available, and in this environment of non-stop new releases, it’s sometimes good to take a step back and look at the following watches. It may have been overlooked. As you can immediately see, this watch, like all others, has a case design that is pleasing to the eye. However, it’s the dial that is particularly noteworthy.
Glashütte Original 60’s Chronograph Annual Edition
The 2023 Sixties Chronograph is a stainless steel watch with familiar dimensions. The case size is 42mm x 48.5mm and the thickness is 12.4mm. The final measurements include the heavily domed front and back sapphire crystals. In keeping with its vintage style, this watch is water resistant to a depth of 30 meters. A pump pusher, large crown and polished surfaces complete the case design. There is no blue on the watch face, but the case comes with a dark blue nylon strap with a stainless steel pin buckle.
The dial is the business card of the watch
I remember the original 60’s chronographs and remember being fascinated by the domed dial as well as the liquid domed crystal. This watch has always struck me as one of the most attractive modern chronographs. The Sixties Chronograph Annual Edition takes it to the next level with its special dial construction. The Glashütte Original factory, based in Pforzheim, Germany, creates its dials through a multi-step process. First, the brass blank is embossed using a heavy press, and a second process creates the dome shape. The dial is then galvanized and coated with gray lacquer, and the edges are hand-applied with black paint to create an aged effect. Finally, linear hour markers are milled into the dial and white paint is used for the details. Super-LumiNova is applied to the luminous pips and red gold hands.
The result is a very beautiful watch that still looks fresh and classy, even though the popular design has been in production for nearly a decade. The sheer simplicity of the design stands out against a sea of sportier, busier chronographs with tachymeter bezels and date windows.
Automatic caliber 39-34
The Sixties Chronograph uses the brand’s in-house 39-34 automatic movement with a power reserve of approximately 40 hours. This 51 jewel powerplant has a frequency of 28,800vph and features hand winding and hacking seconds. Functionally, it features a traditional chronograph with a central seconds hand and 30-minute counter. In terms of finishing, the 21K gold rotor includes the Glashütte stripe and double G logo. The underlying movement is equipped with Glashütte’s typical three-quarter plate and swan-neck regulator.
on your wrist
The Sixties Chronograph Annual Edition isn’t the smallest watch, so I’d love to see one with a 39mm case. Still, it compares favorably with competitors like Omega and Breitling. The 20mm Perlon-style strap is attractive, but if it’s not to your taste, Glashütte Original offers a variety of alternatives.
lastly
The 2023 Sixties Chronograph Annual Edition is priced at €9,700 and will be available in limited quantities at authorized dealers. This is a beautiful Glashütte Original watch and I’m glad this model is still in production. When a watch is this attractive, sometimes all it needs is a subtle adjustment.
