We’re back with a new episode of Fratello On Air. We missed last week’s broadcast due to travel and guests. This week, we’re talking about clock research, the time it takes, and the self-satisfaction we get from discovering something new. It’s another nerdy episode, but we had a lot of fun recording it. Listeners, the clock content starts at 22 minutes in.
The study of clocks sounds like an admittedly boring topic. However, this is far from the truth. There is a lot to discover in the depths of digital libraries. We discuss the effort and time it takes to trawl the internet for information, and the joy of discovering something interesting.
Steering wheel control
We’re back on track! We discuss travel, shoes, and more before moving on to the main topic of watch research. It’s been two weeks, so there’s plenty to talk about at the start of this episode. We move on to the Handgelenkskontrolle next, where Balazs is enjoying a beachside vacation in Turkey with his Ming 17.09. Mike unearths a late ’90s Junghans Max Bill manual-wound model he bought on his first business trip to Germany in 1999. It’s a beautiful 34mm stainless steel watch that’s finally being worn after 25 years.
Watch Research
Mike provides a brief overview of a recent in-depth article on the Movado Museum Watch. A significant amount of horological research has debunked some of the myths surrounding these watches. We discuss the power of digital archives such as the Library of Congress, newspaper archives, and legal cases. The work was neither easy nor quick, but Mike was able to bring new information to light, with the help of several people along the way, of course. We compare this recent research to Balazs’ 2019 Angelus Collector’s Guide to Military Vintage Chronographs, and discuss how sources have changed. Finally, we cover the new official Submariner book and its statement of production totals. What does this mean for Rolex information in the future?
We hope you enjoy this latest episode and thanks for tuning in. As always, let us know if you have any ideas for future shows.
