One of Hamilton’s biggest successes in recent years has been the Khaki Field Murph. The watch became a fan favorite after playing a key role in the 2014 blockbuster film Interstellar. Then in 2019, the Murph was released to the public in a 42mm version. Despite its huge commercial success, most watch fans would have preferred the smaller version of the watch. Hamilton delighted fans by introducing a 38mm model three years later, demonstrating that the design works well at either size. But what about the white dial version? I had the chance to go hands-on with the new white dial Hamilton Khaki Field Murph 38mm to find out.
As any die-hard movie fan will tell you, modern remakes of originals often don’t end well. The same can be said about modern remakes of classic watches. But what happens when a brand creates a different version of a popular watch? When I heard that Hamilton would be releasing a white dial version of its popular Murph, I was a little apprehensive (to say the least). I’m usually a fan of black dials. Who wants a Murph with a white dial? After wearing the watch for a few days, the answer to that question is a resounding “yes.”
The Story of the Hamilton Khaki Field Murph 38mm with White Dial
You can probably guess by now that I prefer the white dial version of the new Murph over the 38mm black dial model. Of course, there is no direct connection to Interstellar, but I’ll say it here:
If I were a huge Interstellar fan, I would seek out the 42mm limited edition in special packaging as a collector’s item, and buy this white dial version as a watch to wear. That might seem odd, since I prefer black dials 95% of the time. Let me explain why.
Let’s recall some details about the smaller Khaki Field Murph: The watch features a 38mm stainless steel case that is 11.1mm thick, 44.7mm long, and has a lug spacing of 20mm.
The case is water resistant to 100 meters and features an oversized push-pull crown at 3 o’clock. Looking beyond the numbers and dimensions, the round case has curved lugs that give the watch a slightly classic feel. The polished bezel also contributes to this feel, creating a beautiful contrast with the brushed case below. Additionally, the watch comes with the same alligator-style black leather strap as the black dial version.
The white dial looks clean and clear.
So far, there’s nothing new here. The only new element is the white dial. Hamilton’s designers decided to change the color from black to a bright white, giving it a beautiful and sophisticated texture. The dial contrasts with the black numerals, which are coated with vintage-style luminous paint.
The minute track is black with additional numerals every 5 minutes, and above the dial are stainless steel cathedral-style hands that are also coated with the same beige lume.
I love how the white dial completely transforms the look of the watch. It feels more vibrant and the combination of the yellow lume and the white dial looks sharp. The vivid dial also makes me want to try out different straps for this watch, which was a great idea. It shows how versatile the Murph is.
Hamilton H-10 Movement
Inside the case is the acclaimed H-10 automatic caliber, an evolution of Swatch Group’s latest ETA 2824-2. This 25-jewel caliber operates at 21,600vph and has a power reserve of 80 hours. While the finishing is very understated, the movement features a customized Hamilton rotor for added visual appeal.
According to user reports, the H-10 is a fairly accurate movement, with most reviewers claiming accuracy within ±5 seconds per day – anecdotal, but still very impressive numbers for this standard movement.
Wearing a Hamilton Khaki Field Murph 38mm
Where the new white-dial Murph really shines is on the wrist. As standard, the watch comes with a black leather strap embossed with a crocodile-scale pattern and a stainless steel buckle. To be honest, I’m not a huge fan of this strap; it may look nice, but the quality is subpar. The strap is stiff and tends to fold rather than bend when you try to shape it.
On the wrist it looks good and adds to the classic presence of the watch, but it wasn’t impressive, and this was probably the biggest disappointment, as I know Hamilton has some great leather straps available, including the NATO strap on the Bronze Khaki Field Mechanical model.
But with a convenient 20mm lug spacing, there are plenty of great looking and comfortable strap options available. We put a few of Fratello’s suede and nubuck straps on this watch and they look totally different. This is why I’ve fallen in love with my new Murph so much. Switching straps really shows off the versatility of this watch.
You can wear it with a colorful strap for a casual occasion or a nice dark leather strap for a chic and formal occasion. With a dial that goes with any color, the Murph is a strap monster. In my opinion, this is one of the watch’s greatest strengths.
Final Thoughts on the Hamilton Khaki Field Murph 38mm
As you can probably tell, I love the Hamilton Khaki Field Murph 38mm in white dial version. The black dial version is Since the story is related to Interstellar, I would like to enjoy wearing this version. The textured white dial is paired with vintage-style lume to create a unique look.
While retaining the distinctive Murph design, the bright colors give this watch a decidedly different feel compared to the black dial model, making it the perfect watch to pair with a variety of straps.
Coming from a guy who would choose a bracelet over a strap any day, this makes sense. I could see myself wearing this watch on 10-15 different straps. In addition to its versatility, its size of 38mm in diameter and 44.7mm lug-to-lug means that this watch will look good on a variety of wrist sizes. Returning to the topic of bracelets, Hamilton also announced a black dial version of the 38mm Murph on a stainless steel bracelet. This was a smart move, and I hope the brand adds that option to the white dial version as well.
In conclusion, the new white dial Murph is a great all-around watch for anyone looking for an affordable yet stylish everyday watch. At 995 euros, it’s one of the best options under 1,000 euros. Kudos to Hamilton for releasing this fantastic new white dial Khaki Field Murph 38mm. Knowing how popular the Murph is, I’m sure it will be another huge success among fans.
